Maryland Department of Health reports first case to meet testing criteria for 2019 novel coronavirus in Maryland

Baltimore, MD – The Maryland Department of Health (MDH) today reported that a Maryland resident met the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria for testing for 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). This individual is in good condition and is being monitored while awaiting test results, to be reported by the CDC laboratory.

“The Maryland Department of Health is closely monitoring the rapidly changing situation with 2019 N-CoV, both in the U.S. and in China,” said MDH Deputy Secretary of Public Health Fran Phillips. “As we learn more, Marylanders are encouraged to practice everyday actions to promote good health and to protect yourself and your loved ones from respiratory viruses like the coronavirus — wash your hands thoroughly, cover your cough and avoid close contact with people who are sick. Stay home from work or school if you’re not feeling well.”

At this time Maryland continues to have no confirmed cases of 2019-nCoV.

Information and updates about 2019-nCoV in Maryland — including up-to-date testing and laboratory-confirmed case numbers — are available at: health.maryland.gov/coronavirus.

Rockville wouldn’t shock me given the large, affluent Chinese immigrant population. I know young MCPS students whose parents regularly travel to China.

Sri Lanka has a confirmed case of coronavirus. This makes 60 cases outside of mainland China over 16 jurisdictions.

?? Exposure would be from traveling to China. Lots of folks in Rockville travel to China. Don’t think PP meant anything more sinister.

Today's up date on stats from Wuhan

#CoronavirusOutbreak in Hubei, central China:
- 2,714 confirmed
- 100 deaths
- 2,567 hospitalized
- 47 discharged from hospitals

So 20 new deaths today. Does not include the death in Beijing reported earlier today or the number reported above from Shanghai.

Possibly local Chinese community leaders approached the planners and suggested an abundance of caution based on many people having recently traveled to China to visit family.

Not sure where your update is from, but for all of China:

China #coronavirus infections rocket 52% since the last reading just 24 hours ago, jumping to 4193 confirmed cases from 2744.
Death toll jumps 31% to 106 from 81.
In context of SARS 2003, 8098 people infected worldwide. Death toll, 774

How can they calculate the number of cases if they ran out of test kits and turn people away at hospitals. They’re now sick and dying at home. Where is their count?
