First of all, I'm an MB who has a nanny cam but I agree with you that secret nanny cams are a bad idea. I always disclose to any nanny candidate during an interview that we have the cameras. They are obvious and not hidden. While to some degree trust needs to be earned on both ends have hidden cameras completely breaks any trust that might develop. With that said though, I don't really understand the argument that the parents might do something inappropriate with them. What could they possibly do with video of you playing with their children. Assuming you aren't taking your clothes off in the middle of their kitchen (which you really shouldn't do, cameras or not) what kind of footage could they have that they would do something inappropriate with? Obviously if they have cameras in the bathroom that is a different story but if they are really such shady people you would think there would be other signs you shouldn't work for them. |
That's kind of my point. I wouldn't knowingly work for someone who is secretive and deceptive with me, but if I find that you have a hidden camera, I have obviously misjudged your character. At that point I don't really know what you're capable of doing, what you've hidden from me, and where exactly our morals do not line up. You could apply the same assumptions to nanny employers in that shouldn't they just be able to tell if a nanny is shady? Obviously that is not always the case. When you secretly film a nanny you are breaking her trust, while expecting her to blindly trust you. How so many on here rationalize it, I really don't understand. |
I'm a nanny and I want to know if you have cameras, I don't need to know where but be honest that they are around |
Why would you need to know that if you are ok with not knowing where they are? |
I'm an MB and I can understand this. If the family discloses that there are cameras the chances are pretty good they aren't hiding one in the bathroom. If they don't disclose it, who knows where they would put them AND who knows what else they would lie about. |
What makes you think there is oversight in other workplaces regarding cameras? The laws governing the use of cameras and footage are the SAME, whether you're a nanny or another worker. The risks are the same. You are not special. Go ahead and quit your job. Try and get a job in the wider world. You won't be any more protected than you are now. In fact, you'll likely be worse off since most workplaces don't automatically disclose cameras. Fool. |
There is oversight because the job requires more than one person. There is likely a team of people responsible for surveillance. The chances of the entire team being shady are slim to none, and if there is one shady person on the team they'll be checked by the others. Why you can't see the difference is beyond me. But hey, you called me a name so I guess you win the thread! |
So if I set up a hidden nanny cam and let all my neighbors access the feed, does that make you comfortable that there is sufficient oversight? |
How the hell would a nanny know any of that, if you plan to set up a secret cam? If you disclose the cameras, it isn't the same thing. Some nannies are still uncomfortable with them, but most of us understand why you'd want them and would just appreciate that you respect us enough to disclose them. I'm done going back and forth with you. You have no desire to reach any kind of understanding of someone else's point of view, you're just being dogmatic and argumentative. |
Your argument is nuts. Don't use hidden cameras because you might do something inappropriate with the video. If I promised myself not to do anything inappropriate with the video then is that ok? Is that just as good as promising not to use hidden cameras? If I intended on abusing nanycam footage you realize that asking me not to use a hidden camera or asking me not to abuse the video won't really do anything? Nor will suggesting that I set up oversight. You should lobby the hidden camera industry not to sell hidden cameras unless the purchaser can produce a certified oversight and abuse prevention plan. Next time try and come up with a better argument before you suggest that I have no desire to understand the other point of view. Look in the mirror. |
My bosses know i Love thier child, so they also know when the child sleeps I rest, is it a crime to rest? dont think so |
Anyone can get or borrow a camera detector. Most nannies will leave an employer who has not been honest. What a shame. |
Nannies, if you are worried about cameras and the possible negative reflection on your job performance please leave the profession.
Unfortunately you will find almost every job now will have you on some type of performance or security camera. |
It's against the law. If you have installed a hidden camera you have to tell your employees. Especially in Maryland otherwise be prepared to be sued by employees. |
What if your husband is psycho and loves to watch the nanny all the time. |
