Hidden camera detector RSS feed

I found a hidden camera in the home of a family I had been with for a year (they had others I knew about as well) and quit that day. All trust had been broken.
Go ahead, keep your cameras a secret from your nanny, don't be surprised when you can't keep one for too long though...

Cameras in private homes are necessary when a parent wants one and for whatever reason they wish. Period.

Full disclosure required, FYI.

Not required, of course, but disclosure is certainly preferable if you want to have a trusting relationship with your nanny, FYI.

If I find one, I'll quit on the spot.

Agree. Those camera detectors aren't that expensive either.

As a former Nanny, I was pro Nanny cam. I always assumed there was one somewhere. The thing is I trusted my employer. We had long conversations regularly. I thought if I was being recorded that's fine, I'd probably do the same. I never thought of my employer as an employer in that way but someone who's first priority is their child's safety. However, if I worked for someone without a relationship like that, I'd be fine with cameras but I would want them to be upfront about them. And it does bring up questions of where the cameras are located, like if you change your shirt or something, you'd want to know not to do it on the spare bedroom if it's being recorded.

I don't understand all these nannies talking about trust. We trust our children with you. We can't take hidden video to make sure you are treating my most precious the same way when we are not around?

Anyway, here is the legality of the nanny cams from the source you know and trust: care.com.

In Virginia, it is legal to both make video and audio recordings without consent.

--Video surveillance laws: It's legal to install a nanny cam in all 50 states, even if you choose to videotape your nanny without her consent. However, you can't tape her in private areas of your home, such as the bathroom or a live-in nanny's bedroom. If you do install a nanny cam, be sure to do so in common spaces, such as the kitchen or playroom.
--Speech laws: While you can videotape your nanny, several states have laws to protect against audio recordings. If you live in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania or Washington, you must notify your nanny if you have a nanny cam that records both audio and video. Not only could you be prosecuted for violating this law, but any evidence of abuse or neglect found on the tape could be inadmissible during legal proceedings.

I don't know anyone (personally) who'd waste their time with care. They're sheer scum.

Fine. There are several other resources you can google to affirm that it is completely legal to have undisclosed nanny cams (that don't record audio) in every state.

Do you understand that many of us will quit on the spot if we find your secret camera?

Did you know cameras are everywhere in this day and age? they even have same sex workers monitoring dressing rooms in stores. some put up signs, some don't. If I were to ever find a camera, I wouldn't be so put off that I'd never buy anything there ever again. It is weird that some would be so offended that you would quit in the spot. What do you have to hide? I would not want to hire a nanny who has so much to hide that she would quit on the spot if she ever found a camera. It is illegal to take you in the bathroom nor does anyone want to see you there.... So you never want to be seen making some chicken nuggets??? That is that terrible?

It's a trust issue. I recommend that parents install cameras, that way if they think there is an issue, they can check the footage and verify that SuziQ bumped her head on the table before accusing me of wrongdoing. Given that I always document the event and time, it should be easy to zip to that point and verify. However, I require that the family not pretend that they don't have cameras; if they lied to me and I find one, I quit on the spot. I also don't work for a family who has cameras connected to the internet, so that I know they can't be hacked.

Oh, and btw, I never try clothes on in dressing rooms. I buy what I want, try it on at home, wash the things that fit so that I know they won't shrink/ravel/fade and return anything that doesn't fit or is defective. No issues.
