What do you eat when you fast?

In my 8 hour window I would have lunch and dinner.

I IF daily 18:6 with one 20 hours fast weekly. I eat a salad everyday for lunch and whatever for dinner and then a little something sweet. I do count calories because IF won't work if you are eating 3k calories during your window. I eat more on the weekends and have drinks. Works like a charm, been 120 for awhile now, with minimal effort.

Everyone here doing these gimmick diets is going to gain back all the lost weight within the next couple of years.

Just so you know.

And if that happens they will know how to take it right back off.

It just doesn't work as well the second time. Often, not at all.

IF is how I eat now, it's not a gimmicky diet. Nobody needs to eat all day. It's actually better for you to not eat for a long period of time and give your digestion system a break. Do some research.....

Give it a "break" from what, exactly? Does it wear out sooner like a conveyor belt if you don't put it on standby?

I'd be interested in your peer-reviewed trials demonstrating that the human stomach, pancreas, intestines, etc. are optimized by being idle the large majority of the time. I've searched and haven't located any.

I like intermittent fasting. Eating at work is a pain. Literally, if I eat the wrong thing it hurts my stomach. It is just easier to fast unless I'm really hungry (then I go eat ... maybe 1-2x month at work). I do feel like it give my stomach a break, and me. Hey, but that's me, I'm not a peer-reviewed trial.

The problem with getting a peer-reviewed study is that all people are different, and people aren't always fully honest about what they eat. Now, there are studies with rats or other mammals, and we can extrapolate to humans, but I don't think the rats can tell us they feel better or not.

There is evidence that fasting encourages autophagy, which is a good thing.

Look up intermittent fasting and cancer treatment. There is actually a lot of research on how fasting provides health benefits.

Also, if you read up on the Bluee Zones (areas where the communities have unusual longevity) and you will see that either IF (eating within a relatively narrow window of time daily) and/or regular fasting for religious purposes are common in these communities and associated with good health.

Oh, it works. You just might have to up the ante on what you are doing. Our metabolisms change as we get older, like it or not.

You have to create a caloric deficit. It is easier to do that when you eat on a plan like Keto because your insulin levels stay level (out of prediabetic range). When I get my BMI below a certain level I absolutely do see a difference in my carb sensitivity. No question. That metabolic mechanism in my body that gives me a tendency to gain weight - I have to acknowledge it and be aware of it.

^should say blood sugar levels stay out of prediabetic range.

I would add that adding IF to other dietary changes made the difference in bringing my DH’s blood sugar levels from diabetic to normal. Full stop, normal. With no medications.

The diabetic level blood sugar readings were a shock to us last spring, he was overweight but not obese and actually quite athletic, but with a vicious sweet tooth. His doctors wanted him to go on medication but diabetes is usually a progressive desease where the medications do not really treat the cause. I did a lot of reading including Jason Fung and the Diabetes Code and we reduced the amount of highly processed foods in our diet, cut the breads and sugars and he does 2 24 hour (dinner to dinner) fasts a week.

He has kept off about 25 pounds and his blood sugars readings have been completely normal. He has not counted calories at all.

Awesome! Congratulations!

Trying to get my DW to follow this, just recently diagnosed with diabetes. She has got to be one of the most unhealthy, healthy person I’ve ever met.

I fast up to 7 days, eating nothing. I drink water, black coffee, black tea. Salt helps
