His (practicing) Jewish children would pity your ignorance. Curious, which brand of Judaism is Rahm Emanuel practicing these days? If any. |
On the contrary, I have been reading your thread with interest as you can easily see by my responses. I find it quite fascinating how anyone would venture to put Donald Trump and anti-Semitism in the same sentence as you boldly did. Seeing how observant his daughter and son-in-law are to the Jewish faith, I doubt they would maintain much of a relationship with a father who had any leanings whatsoever towards anti-Semitism. Are we missing something here? No need to create drama where there is none. |
If you have actually been reading, then I can't explain why you haven't seen me make this point multiple times. But, sorry to those who will have to read this again. There have been very public and very virulent anti-Semitic attacks against reporters and others who have been seen as opponents of Trump. For examples, see my original post in this thread. Donald Trump was asked about these attacks in an interview and dodged the question. He was asked again as a follow-up and again dodged it. Melania Trump was asked about anti-Semitic attacks against the author of an article about her. Melania replied that the author had brought the attacks on herself. So, here are two instances in which the Trumps not only didn't condemn anti-Semitic attacks, but in the case of Melania seems to have condoned them. I am not saying and have not said that either of the Trumps are anti-Semites themselves. To the contrary, in my original post I said the opposite. But, they don't seem to be particularly bothered by anti-Semitism and definitely are not discouraging it. Because Trump is strongly supported by white supremacists, has retweeted neo-Nazis, and has struggled with how to handled the support for him by David Duke, I think it is fair to say that Trump is cultivating -- or at least not discouraging -- an environment in which anti-Semitism is seen as somewhat acceptable. The fact that none of his supporters here (other than one who opposes all bad things) shows any discomfort about this is quite discouraging. I have to say that this has been somewhat eye-opening for me. I obviously am very in-tune with the anti-Islamic sentiment in our country. But, I thought anti-Semitism had really diminished. Now I see that many -- even many of those who post here -- don't really consider it a serious problem. |

This is a strawman. There is a very anti-Semitic, anti-Sanders, twitter feed from Clinton supporters that has about 10 followers, and I don't expect Clinton to draw attention to it by denouncing it. But if you go and read the comments to the article about Melania, they are absolutely awful...and that incident has gotten a lot of press. As Jeff pointed out, Melania did say something in response to those comments rather than just ignore them, she said the author brought it on herself. No matter how terrible and/or inaccurate the article might have been, that is no justification for the slurs people threw at the author. Both Trumps should have been able to point that out. Instead, they did the worst possible thing which was to acknowledge the comments and then imply they were justified. |
I thought the premise of the original post was that because Trump allegedly has anti-semitic supporters, Trump himself is clearly anti-semitic too. No? |
If not, then are you all asserting that Trump is preaching anti-semitism? |
Googling the "little guys wearing yarmulkes" quote got me to a page that pointed out that it was attributed to him in a book by a guy he says he fired, and that he denies ever saying it. Given the hyperbole he is addicted to, I don't think it would mean much anyway.
As to the actual topic of the thread, Trump's highest, if not only, goal is to increase his support, and he will do nothing to chase away any significant group of supporters, including racists and anti-Semites. Just as he dislikes tax loopholes while making full use of them, he happily accepts support from people even if the reason for their support is not something he agrees with. |

... and this is not any better. really, her husband is Hitler? |
No. That is not the premise of the original post. I am now completely convinced that Trump supporters are completely unable to read and comprehend simple English. Here is the last paragraph of my original post: I assume that Trump grew up among Jews and has associated and worked with them nearly his entire life. His son-in-law is Jewish. His speech to AIPAC was as strong as any that has been delivered. So, I don't believe for a second that Trump himself is the slightest anti-Semitic. However, it does seem that he is comfortable having the support of anti-Semites. My assumption is that Trump's entire campaign has been based on fleecing the rubes and white supremacists are just one more group of rubes to fleece. But, like so much else about the Trump campaign, in the process of taking advantage of the rubes, he is unleashing a lot of dangerous forces in society. Anti-Semitism is one of the more dangerous. My concern is the bolded. Trump is giving legitimacy to anti-Semitism by retweeting the tweets of neo-Nazis, stumbling over how to handle David Duke, and failing to renounce anti-Semitic attacks by his supporters. |
Do we make equal demands of candidates on both sides of the aisle? |
No...that went out a long time ago. You see Trump is responsible for the action of anyone who claims they support Trump. Unlike Hillary and Bernie, they are not responsible for their own actions. I am waiting for Trump to be called a pedophile. We have already hit all the other ones. Come Jeff.. Don't wait start the thread now! I am sure you can make the connection. |
Here is how Sanders reacted to over the top Berniebros: http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2016/02/07/3746988/bernie-sanders-tells-berniebros-to-knock-it-off-we-dont-want-that-crap/
No dodging the question, no blaming the victims, and no online trolls doing everything they can to avoid addressing the issue. Why can't Trump do something like this about anti-Semites? Why can't a single Trump supporter here say something like this? |
