please stop using ST Math in FCPS.

My kid's teacher told students they will do math on ST Math website from tomorrow. Students will waste their nearly 2 hours time on that stupid math website every day, because they have 2 hours 15 minutes to learn math everyday.

Please stop with your nonsense. Your kid will not be spending 2 hours on a math computer program and you know it. Will it be part of the math workshop? Sure. That’s fine. But your kid will not be using it for 2 straight hours.

Grow up.

Can we refuse permission?

I know some AAP centers use IXL not ST MATH as homework. They do math on paper during math class.

+1 to all of this. It might be part of workshop for some students on some days.

It's not "stupid".

Who has a 2 hour math block anyhow?

Cool, but everyone does math on paper during math class. It is not unique to AAP centers.

The issue is ST math doesn't have any word problems. The SOL uses word problems and so does IXL. So practicing on ST math doesn't do anything to actually help them with the assessment.

ST math is mostly pictures and visuals, and kids spend a lot of time manipulating pictures. It is also very repetitive. It is extremely inefficient and doesn't help improve real math ability.

Also, what's the point of being in a classroom if you're working on a laptop? Can't we get back to paper and pencil. That's the whole point of being "in class" after all.

ST Math is not the math curriculum. It’s one tool and as others have said might be used for a center or puzzle talk. Everything in math class is not done solely to prepare for the SOL test.

During math class students are learning to problem solve. They are learning about constructive struggle.

Why not go back to a stone and chisel? Students are using paper and pencil. The laptop is one medium that can be used in addition to the paper, dry erase board, Smartboard, calculator, place value materials, etc.

I am with you OP. My kid did 1 hr of ST Math on the very first day of school. What a waste of time! Constructive struggle my foot! I think only people who are poor at math or who never liked or understood math would say that. Why are teachers pushing ST Math? Why can’t the free Khan Academy be used in that time?

In every ES I’ve ever worked in math is 1 hour. Lang Arts is 2 hours. You sound like a troll.

The true reason that many teachers in Fairfax County pushing students to use ST Math is that the teacher can have more relax free time during students do ST math , don't need to teach any math. In fact , those teachers know the truth in their heart that the ST math is really bad as a math learning way for students.
As parents, if you hope your kids can learn math well on ST math in school, it is impossible, on the contrary, your kids math level must be decrease.

And, here we are, page 1…teachers are lazy bums who hate kids.

You need to contact the principal and ask about the use of ST math and what the guidelines are. After many years of teaching, I know that the thing that makes principals pay attention is parent phone calls.
