As parents, if you hope your kids can learn math well on ST math in school, it is impossible, on the contrary, your kids math level must be decrease.

True. Our AAP math teacher sat to eat a hamburger like a pig during ST math. My kid learned how to talk with her mouth full of lettuce and mayonnaise but while his math level decreased substantially.

Oy, will you let it go that you didn't like the way your kid's teacher ate last year. We all already read about it. Presumably you have a different teacher this year.

Will you ever understand that the main idea in the post is not about how the teacher eats but how erroneous is to use ST Math just to relax and eat a hamburger in the middle of a class? It tells your students you don’t care a single bit if their math level decrease.

DP. Your teacher is an exception. What teachers actually use ST Math and other workstations/centers for is to keep kids occupied while they see small groups or individual students. When we were kids, it was worksheets at our desk. The more things change...

That’s not good.

My son said the same thing about his math teacher. No ST Math! There was 1 short session on Khan Academy on one day but the other days the teacher taught to the whole class and the kids did worksheets. He liked it! I don’t know if this will change if and when the teacher starts small groups. But so far my kid is happy with the math teacher.

Teachers upthread have said that ST Math is not being used as the main math lesson. Students aren’t on their laptops every day.

I think the huge drop in math SOL scores is evidence that ST Math is garbage. FCPS had teachers pushing it all year like heroin dealers.

My 3rd grader told me today that her teacher said that this week and next week they will be practicing logging on to all the various websites that they may need over the course of the year. So, OP, your child may have misheard and they were just checking to make sure the kids all have access to everything in the case that they have to do more online at some point.

st math is bad for students mental health and can make them unhappy or even depressed. most students who don't do st math when assigned will still get the average grade of the people who do use st math. students who love st math can continue but it shouldn't be required in fcps schools.

Anonymous wrote:The issue is ST math doesn't have any word problems. The SOL uses word problems and so does IXL. So practicing on ST math doesn't do anything to actually help them with the assessment.

ST math is mostly pictures and visuals, and kids spend a lot of time manipulating pictures. It is also very repetitive. It is extremely inefficient and doesn't help improve real math ability.

Also, what's the point of being in a classroom if you're working on a laptop? Can't we get back to paper and pencil. That's the whole point of being "in class" after all.

Paper is not the point of being in class. Other people is the point of being in class. Didn't your kid have access to paper during virtual school?

The rest demonstrates such poor understanding of math pedagogy that I can't even respond to it, other than to pray you don't have kids you try to help with their homework.

I hate ST Math. At our school it is “ homework” each night 20 min. Much rather have a worksheet.

Give feedback about ST Math to your school board rep. Ask for textbooks to return.

SB doesn’t control the daily operations of FCPS.

Jiji over paper and pencil... this is the start of the process for how kids slowly and systematically get left behind in elementary school... children who were once curious, excited, and wanted to be challenged, by middle school are now done, done to the point where they have to get a weekly tutor who will babysit them on their homework because they don't understand how to work with fractions (among other things) and can't do their homework on their own. The process repeats in high school but now with the additional angst and moaning over having to 'perform' (aka showing off their broad portfolio of watered down AP classes) for colleges to admire.

A few pro tips for parents: 1) Ignore the above poster. 2) Ensure your little one uses uses more paper and pencil, critical for young students, and 3) Do not give them too much screen time, it will hurt them more than you can imagine. Let them play, go outside, and otherwise do whatever they want, but not too much screen time in elementary.

What do you expect during small group? If you want differentiation, that means everyone not part of that particular differentiated lesson has to do something

Stop with the drama, OP. They are probably starting math groups, so the students who are not meeting in a group with the teacher will get some app time while that is happening.

*My child's school stopped using ST Math and does Reflex instead. It's much, much better.

OP, your child sounds like an excellent candidate for Catholic school.

I read 2 pages before I realized that the OP is from 2021!

If you don't like it and do not think it is effective with your child, you don't have to comply.

I just told them that my daughter wasn't doing ST Math and continued working her through the Singapore Math textbook we had at home.
