In fact , those teachers know the truth in their heart that the ST math is really bad as a math learning way for students.
As parents, if you hope your kids can learn math well on ST math in school, it is impossible, on the contrary, your kids math level must be decrease.

close, something like ST math is what occupies the majority of a class so that a teacher can actually do small group work

ST a math is recommended for use in the pacing guide, we’ve been told to get them on the laptops, Schoology, etc. (for practice) and it’s the first week of school. The principal won’t care that much.

The Schedule that we got from my kid's teacher is that :
9:40- 10:50 Math
10:50- 10:55 Break
10:55- 11:50 Math

Reading is 1 hour.
writing is 35 min.
So the total time of math is 2 hours and 5 min.
In the last virtual school year, the teacher gave students one math example , then let students practice math on ST math in the left math time. Therefore, the teacher can do their things without teaching students math in at least 1 hour. In fact, it is impossible for students to learn math well by practice math on ST math.
So, please, please, the teachers in Fairfax County , don't waste students time during math time , and let your students practice true math skills.

I’m feeling good about my decision last year to tell them to skip ST math and forced them to do other supplemental material that I found during this ST math time instead.

ST Math is a dumb tool. Both of my kids find it boring and slow. Both the AAP teacher and the first grader teacher pushed us to use it weekly for 90 minutes last year. My kids hated it and after I saw what it was, I stopped making them use it. FCPS is pushing teachers to force kids to use it because FCPS spent a lot of $$$ for ST Math and Imagine Learning and Literacy. They need to be able to justify it somehow so that is how they are doing it.

If you don't like ST Math, call your principal. Call the gatehouse curriculum office. Let them know exactly why you don't like.

Honestly we should be using textbooks instead of piece-mealing curriculum off of YouTube/Google/Worksheets. It's leading to inconsistency and gaps in learning.

Me too, I also let my kid do math workbooks bought from Amazon during the ST math time, even though my kid's teacher was unhappy for my kid .

Grow up.

+1 to all of this. It might be part of workshop for some students on some days.

It's not "stupid".

Who has a 2 hour math block anyhow?

New poster. My kids' elementary has 2 hr math blocks also. They're at one of the schools that absolutely tanked on the math SOL pass rate, so I assume this is part of their plan to improve scores. However someone need to tell FCPS using the extra time on ST math isn't going to be the way to do it.

My 2nd DC has also said math this week has been practicing schoology log in and he did 31 minutes of ST math yesterday.

That is why parents need to spend your time on your kids learning , especially on math. Without textbooks , the students can not learn knowledge in system and overall. Furthermore, the students and teachers both are very tired in learning and teaching without textbooks in America. That is why the STEM skills is so bad in America.

I don’t hate ST math as much as some (many even) do. It can be fine as a portion of a math curriculum. However I do have to share that my 2nd grader said they haven’t had math yet this week because they haven’t gotten computers yet! Not that a 7 year old is a reliable reporter per se but there is truth in it.

I don't like ST math just because it is not any good for students to practice and learn math skills. If they use good math learning website , for example , IXL, free Kansa Academy , etc. as parents, we must be happy our kids to use them every day , not on the useless ST math, purely wasting students' math time .

The first two weeks of school are focusing on social emotional stuff. They are doing teambuilding and community building projects and activities. There is not much academic learning in the first two weeks. Then in the third and fourth weeks they will be busy doing assessments and testing so, there is not much new learning occurring for the first month. It's the Fairfax way for ES.

Ugh. I was hoping with them not knowing how long school will last in person, that they would focus on teaching the kids immediately so they can maximize their in school time.

How legally are they planning on shutting down? They can have rolling quarantines, but they have to offer 990 hours in person as a division.

Wait till your 2nd grader gets to 5th grade ST Math ( I don’t know about 3rd and 4th grade ST Math).

I don't tend to think they'll hold on to that law if things get worse here. Regardless, with the pandemic this week probably represents the lowest numbers of elementary kids that will be out due to illness or quarantine until the vaccine for <12 is authorized and the elementary kids can get fully vaccinated.
