The Cook Political Report shifted the open Pennsylvania Senate race from "toss up" to "lean Democrat" in the nonpartisan prognosticator's latest ratings published on Thursday.

Why it matters: The new ratings reflect Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman's (D) edge over Republican rival Mehmet Oz in the hotly contested Senate race.

How is this race possibly just lean Dem with an abhorent GOP candidate???

Cool tends to look a lot at fundamentals, and less at polling. Fundamentals still favor republicans.

+1 I wouldn’t be so sure just yet. This is a state that went for Trump in 2016 (another abhorrent GOP candidate.)

There's a huge difference between Fetterman and Hillary Clinton.

The Fetterman-Oz race comes down to a man who was born, raised and has lived his entire life in Pennsylvania and has devoted the last 16 years in public service (21 years if you include the 5 years he worked in the Americorps helping disadvantaged youth earn their GEDs) for Pennsylvania. As mayor of Braddock, he took and old burnt-out steel mill town and revitalized and restored it. Then he became Lt Governor. Compare this with a carpet-bagger from New Jersey and Hollywood. His only claims to Pennsylvania were that he went to medical school there (yeah, that makes him Pennsylvanian--NOT) and his in-laws live there. Outside of medical school, he's never lived there. He's never served the state. He doesn't even know the people or the issues. He was picked by Trump because he's a Hollywood facade and has huge face recognition from his snake oil years once Oprah Winfrey made him a national celebrity. But he's a celebrity and not a politician and he doesn't know Pennsylvania.

In 2016, the people of Pennsylvania were voting against Hillary Clinton. They'll do it again this year when they vote against Dr. Oz. In fact, all things considered, Donald Trump only won by 0.7% (45K out of 5.8M votes). Considering how much Pennsylvanians disliked the dishonesty of the Clinton clan, it was pretty close. In this case, I predict that Oz is likely to lose by double digit percentages. Oz's most popular point was immediately after the primary. Since then, he has slid and continues to slide. The more he opens his mouth, the less Pennsylvanians like him. And the more he shows that he is completely out of touch with the electorate. Even the pro-Trumpers are seeing him for the vapid, Hollywood, wealthy celebrity that has no clue how to even spell politics, let alone, work in politics.

Cites right wing propaganda, has no clue. I realize this is a slightly off topic bit, but it just astonishes me how much people are swayed by media and have no idea.

No. Bill and Hillary Clinton were two of the most controversy-embroiled politicians of the last three decades. There are whole lists of very suspect actions and issues, from Whitewater, to the Rose Law Firm, to Travelgate, Filegate and her questionable/illegal trading.

This is not just right wing propaganda. I'm a moderate independent and have voted for many candidates from both parties over the last 30 years. It's progressive whitewashing to believe that the Clintons are above the law and deserve to have all of their dishonesty and coverups ignored.

We need to move on to better candidates. We need to be rid of the Clintons, Bushes and Trumps. Three dynasties that we are well to be rid of and hopefully none of them come back.

And yet, between the two of them, other than lying about a mistress, there wasn't one legal allegation or charge that stuck. Hmmm, maybe there was a right wing conspiracy after all?

Came here to say this. And re: HRC, she sat for 10 hours (11?) of testimony under oath and took it to her inquisitors. She wasn't hiding behind an armada of falsehoods and shady lawyers.

Unless it has been edited, Oz’ wiki page says he is a practicing Muslim. He served in the Turkish army and voted in Turkey as a Turkish citizen. Really liberal of the Republicans to embrace him. His connection to Erdogan is a feature not a bug.

Celebrity surgeon Dr. Oz seeks to be first Muslim elected to the US Senate
While his mother adhered to the secular vision of modern Turkey’s founder, Kemal Ataturk, Oz’s father was a strict Muslim, according to a 2012 interview for Henry Louis Gates Jr.’ PBS television program “Faces of America.” As a young man, Mehmet Oz said, he rebelled against both traditions and chose to align his views with Sufism, a mystical Islamic sect.
Besides Sufism, the mystical Islamic sect, Oz's spiritual practices include transcendental meditation and elements of his wife's Swedenborgian tradition.

Are we to believe the GOP has evolved since their days of referring to Barack “Hussein” Obama?

I would be very surprised if the “f*ck your feelings” party had gained any open mindedness at all in the intervening years. Will some vote for anyone with the (R) after their name? Yes. But a lot of them look askance at all those “infidel” religions.

I would guess most people don’t know Dr Oz is Muslim. It’s not like his name has Hussain in it. And the Democrats aren’t as bigoted as Republicans so they’re not going to use it like a campaign slur the way the GOP did with Obama (who was Christian anyway.)

Yeah, the fact that he's Republican means that he is not being treated nearly as poorly as that horrible, horrible Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (because she's a Democrat).

Good Christ. I thought Oz was a cardiologist, but it seems more like he’s a proctologist* given that’s showing himself to be a complete a-hole.

*no shade to real proctologists; the work they do is invaluable like all medical specialities.

Pennsylvania (Previous: 1)

Very little separates the next four races, which are all expected to be extremely tight.

Georgia has remained close, and incumbent Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock has done well so far. Republicans acknowledge that earlier efforts to try and paint Warnock as a "radical" were a mistake. It's tough to make the pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church — the same post once held by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — whose ads have featured him smiling with a beagle, look like a bad guy. Instead, the attacks to come are more likely to be simply making Warnock out to be a Democrat whose votes are out of step with Georgia.

But Georgia is about as purple as it comes now, and Warnock's Trump-backed opponent, Herschel Walker, has his issues as a candidate. Still, the former NFL and University of Georgia running back has high name ID and appeal among Republicans. And Walker will likely benefit from the gubernatorial race of Republican Brian Kemp, who is currently favored to win reelection. This one will likely be a nail-biter.
