We canceled our trip to CR. We Don’t want to get sick in a country where we don’t know much about their health system.

Same here. Supposed to go next weekend but don’t want to get stuck if there are more restrictive travel bans in place.

You can cancel online with United and you will get back 100% of your ticket price refunded to your CC. No need to wait on hold.

Were these nonrefundable tickets? Can you walk us through how? I get an error message on United.com when I try (my flights are basic economy so maybe that is why). Thanks!

I'm the OP of the United question. I went online as the pp suggested. I will not be able to receive a refund but they will give me credit for the full amount i paid for a future flight. Better than nothing!

Is there a time limit for using those credits? What I’m seeing on United.com sounds like you have to travel within one year of when you bought your tickets?:

All cities
Original travel dates
March 9, 2020 - April 30, 2020

Additional information
FLIGHT CHANGES:

New tickets must be reissued on/before December 31, 2020 or 12 months from original ticket date, whichever is earlier
Rebooked travel must commence within 12 months from the original ticket issue date
ORIGINAL TICKET MUST BE ISSUED ON OR BEFORE:

March 2, 2020

Head of CDC says not a good idea. But you go ahead special snowflake!

It was a simple question. You seem like a delightful person.

Also, I'm not sure what the head of the CDC said in front of Congress, but as of now, the CDC website still says "Watch Level 1: CDC does not recommend canceling or postponing travel to destinations with level 1 travel notices because the risk of COVID-19 is thought to be low." So, until official warnings and information are changed, it was a totally legitimate question.

Again, THREE TIMES the CDC head JUST SAID this situation is rapidly changing and it's now very obvious that travel, especially international, is bringing it back and seeding communities here with it. Expect that to change.

There is a live conference going on now. Turn it on.
The advice is specific to those over 60. They have not said to avoid traveling. If this was the case we should halt travel on subways and buses since it’s in the DC area.

Nope. He specifically said that Americans were going overseas to Europe and bringing it back here, seeding their communities.

I just FINALLY talked my septuagenarian parents into canceling their trip to the Caribbean later this month. They think the whole thing is a hoax. They were able to get their money fully refunded (booked via Expedia).

Good question! Strangely enough I have not yet received a confirmation email of my cancellation so I can't share the details yet. Hopefully it comes soon. I wonder if the credit will be useless even a year from now given how the virus is spreading...

Then they should change their guidance. Willing to bet that more people are looking on the website for guidance than tuning into every press conference.

I have a united flight I paid for with money but used miles to upgrade. Anyone with experience on how cancelling / changing this might work?

Yes, we are the ones who brought it to Italy, not vice versa. /s

Apparently the city New Rochelle is now under lockdown. We have a wedding to go to in Tarrytown the weekend of April 4th. I guess things can change for the better or worse in 3 weeks. But considering not going.

DP, but there is definitely concern abroad that the U.S. is not taking this seriously and that the number of cases is much higher than reported due to lack of testing. It's likely that it has been here for some time and just wasn't apparent until it hit the nursing homes.
