The tragedy of Nyiah Courtney, age 6, gunned down while riding her scooter. Rest in peace, little angel.

| That is awful. Poor baby. |

PPs, had you genuinely not heard about this? I’m so horrified by how much more coverage the Nats game shooting got. This happened days before. Same thing, except a beautiful little girl lost her life.
This isn’t even the first time this happened in recent memory. It feels eerily similar to the murder of Makiyah Wilson. What gets me is that, how many people know who did this? At least 20, right? The guys in both cars, some of their families. I don’t know how we can address anything until those 20 people value the lives of others enough to not be okay with this. I think they ended up arresting like 10 people in the Makiyah Wilson case, and it was all about “gangs” from rival housing projects “protecting their turf.” I’m using quotes because these idiots aren’t even making minimum wage with this shit. It’s not like there’s an illegal empire at stake. There’s always someone with a straight job who’s actually paying the electricity bills. |
| The shooting at the Nats staduum was during a televised game. What was being televised in this neighborhood? |
| It’s been all over the local news and a terrible tragedy. It’s senseless killing of a child m. This article says they were waiting to board a bus. https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/mother-of-nyiah-courtney-6-year-old-fatally-shot-in-southeast-dc-wounded/2733609/ |
| It is really looking like it might be time to leave the country for good. These guns will be the end of us all. |

Thanks, Scalia.
Republicans blocked the gun control laws that we want — that DC citizens want. Listening to Warren Burger, Nixon’s extremely conservative Chief Justice, is informative: “The Gun Lobby’s (Federalist Society’s) interpretation of the Second Amendment is one of the greatest pieces of fraud, I repeat the word fraud, on the American People by special interest groups that I have ever seen in my lifetime. The real purpose of the Second Amendment was to ensure that state armies – the militia – would be maintained for the defense of the state. The very language of the Second Amendment refutes any argument that it was intended to guarantee every citizen an unfettered right to any kind of weapon he or she desires.” – Warren Burger, Conservative Supreme Court Chief Justice. Lots of issues are at play, but guns are probably the biggest issue. RIP to the child. And let’s all fight to have stronger gun control laws. Since DC already voted overwhelmingly for those laws, let’s fight the Fed Soc. |

Poor baby. I hope she gets justice. |
I’m all about gun control but the problem here is we have these housing projects and communities that perennially, (for decades!) produce dozens of young men who routinely shoot wildly at each other in the streets and terrorize the whole community. And the mothers and girlfriends and grandmothers who house and clothe them and buy and store their guns. Then those go to jail and another set take their place. |

I am white and upper class and gasp — sometimes my 6yo has been up at 11pm this summer. Backyard gatherings with family and friends run late, everyone is having fun and late going to bed. The difference is that have the means to drive our own car and we don’t have to wait for the bus in a neighborhood that experiences high levels of gun and other violence.
This poor baby and her family. It’s tragic. The victims are not in any way at fault. |
I am all fir taking guns away but DC has a strong gun control law and a huge rate of gun usage in crime. You can control guns until there are nine but how do you make the lives better for people who get guns easily despite gun control. If you have nothing to live for it is easy to kill |
So the Bill of Rights are individual rights with the exception of the Second Amendment? I am sorry, but your reading of the amendment is not the accepted interpretation. |
| Let’s blame Bowser for allowing the city to go to hell under her watch. She is spending taxpayer money on her middle of the city graffiti park while this poor baby gets shot. Bowser is such a political hound with no ethics. |
Which laws is it that DC is not being allowed to have. You may not have noticed, but firearm laws in the District of Columbia are among the most restrictive in the country. Indeed, at least the following are in effect in DC: 1. All firearms must be registered. 2. Unlawful to possess unregistered firearm. 3. Unlawful to possess ammunition without registered firearm. 4. Lengthy list of banned long guns by name and/or characteristics. 5. Specified list of handguns allowed -- no "Saturday Night Specials." 6. Unlawful to carry firearm openly. 7. Unlawful to carry pistol without a license. 8. Training with actual target exam required for license. 9. Places where licensed pistol can be carried highly restricted. 10. Ammunition carried with licensed pistol extremely limited. 11. No open or vehicular long gun carry. 12. No possession of firearms or ammunition by minors, prohibited persons (felons, drug users, violent mentally ill). 13. No private sale of firearms. 14. Prepurchase safety training. 15. Background check on all purchases. 16. Longstanding (at least the 1970's) limit to 10 round magazine capacity. 17. Negligent firearm use unlawful 18. Criminal firearm use unlawful. 19. Use of firearm in crime of violence, drug crime, etc., unlawful. How many of these laws do you suppose the person(s) involved in this shooting violated? To make it easier, how about guessing how many they COMPLIED with? There are plenty of laws. What there is not is any appetite to enforce them. Why aren’t felons in possession of firearms not being sent away for five years? Why aren’t people doing at least a year or two for carrying guns without a permit? Why are the cases bargained to nothing and the slam-dunk convictions being foregone? Why are people charged with gun crimes and/or crimes of violence being held until trial instead of being released? |
It’s not guns. It’s not poverty. 99.99% of gun owners are responsible citizens. 99.99% of poor people are responsible citizens. It’s culture. |
