Any success in stopping snacking, other than IF?

Anonymous
I have gained 8 lbs in a few months and am now 20-30 lbs overweight. Have a 2 and 4 year old and SAH. I need to stop snacking. Has anyone had success with a program to stop snacking, that is not IF and ideally does not involve tracking? Thank you!

You don’t really need a program to stop snacking. You make one rule. No eating between meals.

Try it for one day and see how it goes.
Try the next day.
Try the next day.
Try the next day….

Eventually you will stop snacking.

+1 I’m a little confused by the question. Not snacking is the program. You do that.

Up your protein.

Eat 5 times a day, every 2-3 hours. Don't track anything, 4 out of 5 has significant amount of protein, a lot of veggies. Stop eating at 6, no desire to snack, so tired of eating whole day long.

Up your protien and up the amount of food you eat at a meal. Sit down and eat a real meal. The only way I can accomplish this is by meal prepping. I make lunches for the week: grilled chicken, brown rice, sautéed spinach, for example. It’s filling and doesn’t leave me hungry and wanting more in 2 hours. I also prep bags of cut up veggies and laughing cow light cheese for a snack so I have something healthy on hand.

I don’t buy snacks for the house because I will eat it if they are there. I eat lots of protein and fruits and vegetables and drink a lot of water.

When you feel the need to snack, gulp down a 20 glass of water.

Out of sight, out of mind.

This is really where I feel exercise comes into play. Not to lose calories, but to stop boredom snacking. So if you're about to grab a bag of chips, go for a wall or a hot around the block or do some crunches or push ups .

There's also a question of are you hungry. There's the apple test and the glass of water/ tea/coffee test. Basically if you're not hungry after as glass of one of these, or if you don't want an apple you're not really hungry and can wait.

np well op has little kids. I stopped eating it when I realized I was eating my kids' food and I wanted them to have it more than me!

Thanks everyone. I am at the highest non-pregnancy weight I’ve ever been this morning.

What I liked about IF: the absolutism of when you could eat reduced demands on my willpower, plus I liked seeing my progress, in terms of hours fasted, on the Zero app. Also the community aspect of the Gin Stephens podcast and FB group. So I was wondering if there was something like that, but to stop snacking.

But I think the absolutism is what made it backfire for me, so...

One of my DCs is SN and I think I use food to help me deal w/ some of it.

Yes, don't stay at home. Get a super busy job, where you are physically working and can't snack..
LOL!

I know you said you didn’t want to track calories but I found tracking calories to be so eye opening and really helped me curb my snacking. I work from home and would snack throughout the day and didn’t really think much about it but once I started tracking calories to stay under a certain amount I was shocked to see how quickly those little snacks added up. Now I’m much more purposeful about when and what I snack on (I know I will be hungry between meals so usually time a Greek yogurt and some fruit or veggies mid morning and mid afternoon). I also make sure I am drinking water and have plenty of sparkling flavored water and tea available.

Interestingly, the recent weight gain corresponds with my taking a temporary FT WOH job that I really liked; I was hoping it would lead to weight *loss,* b/c I’d be more satisfied w/ life, but the commute — 1 hr in car per day — plus not as much time to shop and cook >> more takeout, plus trying a new ADHD med, I think, led to weight gain.

I am now done w/ the job, so should theoretically be able to reverse any job-related gain, but it hasn’t happened yet (been done for 2 weeks).

I lost 40 pounds while snacking and have kept it off while continuing to snack.

My most common snacks are banana, apple, an 80 calorie mini Kind bar, carrots, low or no sugar Greek yogurt, etc. As long as I don't reach for chips or cookies, I do fine.

I couldn't stick to a diet that left me hungry all the time and couldn't "train" my body to not want food as is often suggested here on DCUM.
