You keep citing an article that was written in 2017. Gangs are something that we all need to worry about but if MS-13 was so prevalent at HHS I think we would have more news reporting on it then an article from 2017. Do you have anything more recent that shows that this is a problem or even a developing problem? I have friends who kids go to HHS. 4 kids have graduated from HHS and 2 are currently attending. They are happy with the education that their kids have received and have never discussed their kids being unsafe. Either provide something more recent and relevant or stop the fear mongering. |
All I’ve heard Strauss say about Langley’s boundaries are that they will change if a new high school is built in western Fairfax and part of McLean should move to Langley to relieve the overcrowding. When questioned about One Fairfax, the only example she’d give was that kids at one Langley feeder should have the same opportunities as kids at another Langley feeder. Hynes has made some provocative statements, but she isn’t pushing for any major boundary changes. She also supports moving kids from McLean to Langley to address the McLean overcrowding (and not sending Herndon kids to Langley or McLean kids to other schools further away like Lee or Mount Vernon with extra seats). So I’m not sure what all the hysteria is about, other than Republicans trying to stir up support by claiming the Democrats are out to redistrict everyone when it seems like their actual goals are more modest. |
DP but a report from two years ago is not something to be lightly dismissed. If I already have kids at HHS and everything is going well, I'm going to stay and tell people that when it comes up in conversation. If I'm new to Northern Virginia or am moving from a nearby county or district, I'm not going to take the chance. This pyramid would not be an option. |
They paused boundary studies (save 2 elementary schools I believe) while they pondered how to re-do the policy according to a "One Fairfax Lens". Considering that socioeconomic diversity was in the top two considerations (if not the first) in their latest draft the idea that they have grand plans to mix things up is not baseless. The fact that McLean parents and students have been complaining for years of overcrowding and the board was not ready with a plan to move McLean students to Langley after its very expensive renovation resulted in lots of space adds to it. They are all on video at their meetings. Brabrand told McLean that there would be no reboundary until they had a countywide plan. Why then would anyone NOT think that a major rearranging was what they had in mind? This is no conspiracy theory. The fact that the republicans are loving this does not change the facts of what has been happening and NOT happening (moving kids from a severely overcrowded school to an under enrolled one 3 miles away). The current school board did this to themselves. I have never voted straight ticket in my entire life so I am not giddy or worried about the party of who sits on the school board. I want members who -are responsible with money -focused on education -care about how students feel -want to help make an environment that helps teachers be effective -transparent in their goals and motivations Keeping kids in trailers unnecessarily, causing them discomfort and wasting thousands in the process, and hiding the motivations behind doing so fits with NONE of those. |
MS-13 is throughout FCPS. Maybe not at Langley or McLean, but it s more widespread than you realize. Certainly, it is also down on Hwy 1. Are all these members murderers and rapists? No. But, it is certainly not a good group to have around. Read the newspaper. It doesn't mention the high schools, but it does identify the areas. There have been incidences involving MS-13 all over the county.
DS graduated from a different high school a few years ago. He talked about the MS-13 hall. Were those kids really MS-13? No idea. But, that's what the kids thought. Likely rumors with a seed of truth. I have known teachers at Herndon High. I've never heard complaints about this. I've also known people with kids there--they all seem happy with it. |
I never said any of that. But feel free to attack the straw man if it makes you happy. |
Probable. |
Make sure none of the rich kids are allowed to spread their disrespect and bad habits to the poor students. |
I don't think you've been following the work sessions. And, if you think this is just a clip, you are correct. So, go listen to the whole sessions. Nothing to change what she said in this clip. Ironic that she is only doing this now when she is not running for reelection. What did she tell Great Falls in earlier years. She sure protected Dranesville from South Lakes during that boundary decision. Janie Strauss: "To Langley parents, I've already told them--a big chunk is going to get boundaried. Sorry." http://www.voicesoffairfax.org/ you tube video |
Well, I guess that settles it. Y'all! pp knows a couple people who never mentioned anything to her. Therefore, there is absolutely NO problems at HHS and the 50% FARMS. |
No inconsistency with what I said before. Strauss has been telling Langley for years that its boundaries will change when a new high school is built in western Fairfax. So has FCPS facilities staff (for example, when they denied a request by a real estate developer to have a new development on the south side of Route 7 reassigned from Herndon to Langley). The western high school wasn’t really part of the dialogue during the South Lakes boundary study over a decade ago. The Republicans are trying to spread misinformation by suggesting Strauss’s comments are due to One Fairfax, as opposed to simply being consistent with what happens every time a new school gets built. If she’s to be criticized, it’s for waffling before different audiences as to the probability that the new school will actually end up getting built. |
Herndon HS was 43% FARMS last year, the same as the prior two years, not 50%. If you want to round, it’s 40%. |
Why are you making this political? Do you really think only Republican residents of Great Falls are concerned? We are not talking about the new high school. We are talking about a policy that will affect all of Fairfax County at all levels. Please, by the way, tell me who you would put into Langley if there is a new high school? That is a serious question. |
McLean is also concerned.
No one is happy with the evidence that the school board has kept kids in an overcrowded school because the nearby school with space is too rich and McLean is too rich and the obvious thing to fix overcrowding doesn't solve that "problem". |
This absolutely has been made political. Please give me one specific example of how the One Fairfax policy or the views that informed it have led to actual decisions by FCPS that should seriously concern county residents. I get that it has led to delays in taking actions that could have been addressed sooner, such as the McLean HS overcrowding, but that will sort itself out within the next two years. How many times do you need to be told that space at Langley can be used to take kids from McLean and Marshall. McLean has 18 trailers this year and Marshall has a 12-classroom modular this year. And those schools can be expected to see continued growth in Tysons and around the West Falls Church meyro. |
