gaining weight and not sure why?

Anonymous
I am steadily gaining weight - about 1 lbs a week? This has been happening for about 8 weeks, so I'm up 8 lbs. I'm on WW, I am following the points, and I am eating worlds better than I was before I started WW. I am also moving more. I'm not sure what to do? I feel fine, have no other symptoms of weird stuff going on, but the scale just keeps going up without stopping. I'm not sure what to do? I am 42, if that matters.

Dr appointment. Thyroid hormones check to begin with If you have a log of your food intake - bring it, so there is no talk that you just eat more than needed. Sudden with gain/loss is a reason to visit a doctor. No exceptions.

Did this just start when you started WW? Maybe you're eating lots of "free" foods and don't realize how they're adding up?

This is what I was thinking. Which plan are you following?

OP here. So I'm on Green, and I hvae been since January. I lost weight at first, and now, I'm just steadily gaining. I just saw a freidn last night who said whoa, your boobs are so big! So, the fat is going there and hips.

I'm on green so that I can't overeat the 'free foods', and I don't. I get 36 points a day, and I hit it pretty well every day. This is what I ate yesterday, which is pretty similar to what I eat every day:

Breakfast: one cup oatmeal, banana, PB2 powder and 1 tsp syrup (7 points)
Lunch: pita sandwich with 1 oz cream cheese and spinach + fruit (7 points)
Snack: 1/3 C fat free greek yogurt with 1 TBS almond butter and 1 tsp syrup (5 point) + apple
Dinner: 1 C whole wheat penne + tomato sauce + meatballsl (10 pts)
Random: coffee w fat free half and half (2 pts)

Not nearly enough protein and veggies. I would say too much fat and carbs too.

Could be true. However, it's what I've been eating for the past 4 months, with success or no gain. And then in teh past 8 weeks, there's been a steady gain, so something is different outside of the food, I think.

Your diet is unbalanced. You might have lost weight at the beginning due to calories restrictions.
Outside of the diet, your next place to check is your hormones (and A1C just in case)

Agree with PPs - that is not a well-balanced diet. I would also see your dr for a full bloodwork check.

OP here. I'd love to see people's ideas of a well-balanced diet. I'm getting protein/whole grains/fruit & veggies at every meal. Obviously this is not exactly what I eat every single day, but it's a point estimate per meal for me. Sometimes the lunch is a miso soup with tons of veggies/tofu and brown rice noodles. Sometimes the dinner is a protein/brown rice/veggie.

OP, when I was losing consistently, this is what I was eating. I think your diet is fairly high in sugar and fat.

Breakfast - green smoothie with frozen berries, nonfat greek yogurt, carrot juice, and spinach; coffee with lowfat milk and sugar
morning snack - whole grain toast with avocado and red pepper flakes
lunch - broth-based soup with beans, vegetables, leafy greens
snack - nonfat low sugar greek yogurt or vegetables with hummus
dinner - lean meat or fish with large salad and some type of whole grain
extra (some nights depending on points/cals) - one drink or small square dark chocolate or fudgicle

The boobs comments makes me need to ask ... any chance of pregnancy? Otherwise, I would be concerned enough to schedule a doctor's visit with unexplained and consistent weight gain.

I think there are too many “empty” carbs, lacking in high nutrition. I would add more green veggies, less bread/pasta/grains. A serving of banana is actually 1/2, so I would eat 1/2 banana and add in 1/2 c berries for more fiber. All in all, I don’t see enough veggies. The spinach doesn’t really help you, esp if eaten raw. You don’t list serving sizes, but I would replace the sandwich, wihich has empty carbs, with a big, colorful salad. And watch the oils in the dressing. Use MyFitnessPal and track serving size/calories to see the hidden amounts that add up. I suspect you’ll be able to manage it better if you can see where your calories are coming from. Points can be a successful way to manage, but not if you aren missing hidden fats and calories.

Are you exercising much more than you used to? That can cause weight gain initially (water retention etc)

Are you on any meds? SSRI?
