Travel Soccer teams around NOVA let's discuss

^^ Sorry. You clearly don't know as much about the older age groups at VYS as you think you do. Other PP is right, if you've been around awhile, the name would be familiar to you.

Parent coach has been coaching team in area club since his high school kid was 8. Coach's kid not that good, but still always allowed to be team captain. This year many kids on that coach's team had a chance to move up to the A team in a new more competitive league. Coach's kid was not among them, so coach held all players back with various excuses and so far flummoxed new technical director has not intervened -- this to the disgust of parents + kids on ALL teams in that age group.

Heck yes, parent involvement can give a kid a leg up, even for years.

Why do I get the feeling this is about VYS?

So much about this story doesn't make any sense. Parent coaches in high school-age travel? Team captains at U9?

VYS is going into VPL, but only a couple of coaches have kids in VYS, and this doesn't add up for them -- the team and division assignments don't lend themselves to the story you're telling. On the girls side, a couple of teams have been playing well above VPL level, anyway.

Lee Mount Vernon is going into CCL. Not sure I see it working with their structure, either.

So I don't know that I'm calling BS, but I'm definitely skeptical.

I originally guessed VYS because that club fits all of the criteria in the OP (new league, new TD, parent coaches for HS teams) and there is one coach I know of that coaches a HS-aged B team and is in a position to stop player movement. Idk if it's him, but if you've been around VYS at all the last few years, his name would be familiar to you.

I don't understand why any parent coach, let alone one from the B-team would be able to stop player movement at an academy-based club. One of my kid's friends said a couple of players left for other clubs because a coach told them they couldn't move up. Why would any club worth it's salt allow this?

Does your travel soccer team train through the summer? If so, what's the age, how often do they train, and are their repercussions for missing the sessions because of vacations, conflicting with another sport, etc.?

Mine trains twice a week at all age groups. I think it's absurd, given all the research on burnout and overuse injuries. But they're laid-back about it. Everyone's going to miss a few practices over the summer.

I think we are one of the only clubs that doesn't have a regular practice schedule for the summer. We only have 2-3 practices for the entire summer on tap.

Nephews and friends in other clubs have 2-3 weekly practices all summer.

Most reasonable clubs understand summer is at time when families travel. Practice isn't 'mandatory'.

Our son's U-13 CYA team just started with summer practice - once a week for 1.5 hours. Sometime in late August, they'll probably ramp things up going into the fall season. Last summer the same team had just a few scattered practices. About 1/2 the team is new, however, so (1) trying to integrate new players and get everyone working as a team & (2) going to U-13 with more kids on the field, bigger ball, field, goals, etc.

BTW, we have an AWESOME coach and manager. Low key team (not uber-competitive). Still looking to pick up a few more players for the Fall in case anyone is interested...

When a team transfers from ODSL to NCSL- how do they determine what division to put the team in? Anyone know?

Big surprise. Now to get rid of the abusive boys' coach. So glad we left that shit show.

Hearing anything yet on the new January 1 birth date cut off changing from using August 1? Seeing it on other sites. USSF adopted the change in early July. Organizations (leagues, clubs) have until 2017 to make the change, but "best practice" per USSF is to start with next year's tryouts.

Any opinions on the new regime at VYS since Eddie Lima left? Better? Worse?

Not clear yet what this means for McLean. As a club, are they still serious about pushing to make the boys side as strong as the girls? Have they given up hope of regaining DA status? What exactly were philosophical differences between Krieger and the club?

Yes, if there is ever difficult decision between a few players...look at the parents. Are they known to be difficult on the sideline? Are they PITAs? Do they help out? Are they supportive? Loyal? etc.

Loyal?

Never believe for a second a club will be 'loyal' to your child. Never.

Exactly! I know this first hand! Helped out the team in many ways, when it came down to it, my kid was cut! Brutal ....... but understandable.
