Do parent involvement give a kid a leg up?
Yes, if there is ever difficult decision between a few players...look at the parents. Are they known to be difficult on the sideline? Are they PITAs? Do they help out? Are they supportive? Loyal? etc. |
Loyal? Never believe for a second a club will be 'loyal' to your child. Never. |
| Are the parents loyal to the coach. Are they loyal to the club? Do they have other children in the club? Or do they bounce from club to club to club when they don't get their way. Yes, a club itself doesn't care about any one kid. |
Yep. Not only that--but the Coaches bounce from club to club almost more than the kids!! Get fired from one Club--we'll hire you to run ours. |

Parent coach has been coaching team in area club since his high school kid was 8. Coach's kid not that good, but still always allowed to be team captain. This year many kids on that coach's team had a chance to move up to the A team in a new more competitive league. Coach's kid was not among them, so coach held all players back with various excuses and so far flummoxed new technical director has not intervened -- this to the disgust of parents + kids on ALL teams in that age group. Heck yes, parent involvement can give a kid a leg up, even for years. |
Why do I get the feeling this is about VYS? |
My bets are on LMVSC |
That is too bad and a lost opportunity for the coach and team. It is upsetting and frustrating to play for this type of coach and club. Try not to let this "adult" steal the kids love and joy of the game. Played travel ---- college. Coached travel and 3 high school teams, all out West and the Pacific Northwest. Son now playes travel here and had played in 2 other states. We used and had the Captin and alternate sign a "Team Captin Certification." Many times Captin and alternate Captin was a team vote or combo of coach and team vote. Coaches should work with team Captin's to develop and use their leadership skills. |

So much about this story doesn't make any sense. Parent coaches in high school-age travel? Team captains at U9? VYS is going into VPL, but only a couple of coaches have kids in VYS, and this doesn't add up for them -- the team and division assignments don't lend themselves to the story you're telling. On the girls side, a couple of teams have been playing well above VPL level, anyway. Lee Mount Vernon is going into CCL. Not sure I see it working with their structure, either. So I don't know that I'm calling BS, but I'm definitely skeptical. |
I originally guessed VYS because that club fits all of the criteria in the OP (new league, new TD, parent coaches for HS teams) and there is one coach I know of that coaches a HS-aged B team and is in a position to stop player movement. Idk if it's him, but if you've been around VYS at all the last few years, his name would be familiar to you. |
