PS - Here's a long thread about Travel Soccer with a lot of specific references to VYS from earlier this year.

Christ Lady, give it up. My brother was a standout in the area. All-Met, All-Region, national Team, scholarship and Professional. Anyone that saw him play knew he was destined for greatness.

He's the first to say it wasn't worth it.

Soccer is the US is a joke. What are you trying to get out of this? A 40-75k MLS career a few seasons?

Have him study, have fun with the sport, relax and go join a Frat in college. It's a better time.

Developing all positions? What a crock of shit!!

I was starting left midfielder for 6 years Travel and 4 years of High School.

At an early age, you can start seeing a kid's natural aptitude based on drive, genetics, speed and ability.

There is a natural Striker--hunger for the goal that can't be taught, speed, ball control. The work-horse midfielder, great at feeding passes, that defender that can stop anything.

To put a striker on defense is absurd. My travel team was undefeated for 8 seasons and we only put people in unnatural positions when we were trying to prevent the score from running up.

It pains me to see this 'develop all positions BS'.

It's obvious the A team was dealt the better players, but the B team also has a couple of good ones. Sorry PP, I'm not going to get into specifics. I really need to focus my energy in a letter to the Eddie Lima.

You should send it to Eddie, but also copy the President of the VYS Board. Eddie is in one of the few paid positions in VYS and the Board (all volunteers) needs to know if parents aren't happy with his work.

Read the post for what it is and keep calm...... I never said my son was a stellar player, in fact I pointed out that he was not among the best. I have no reason to lie and say he's at the top of his league.

While soccer may be a joke in the US according to you. My son has the possibility of playing in Europe if he so choses, do I think he will, probably not. But he can go to school in Europe and play for a league there if he choses. I never said I wanted to get a scholarship out of this, in fact I said exactly the opposite. So before you come into the bull pin, read the OP's original post!

Thanks, I appreciate your feedback and sincerity.

We live in Vienna but play travel in Herndon. I love it because most of the coaches have Hispanic backgrounds and play/teach with a real flair and passion for soccer. My 9 year old is still playing house as I have enough travel with the older kids but I think I will have him try out this spring. I have watched the kids that age train and they are very skilful. The coaches are all paid and it's about $800 a year, not including the uniform.

MLS salaries have actually gotten a bit better than that and will surely go up even more in the next collective bargaining agreement.

Back to Vienna -- I can see the coaching being hit or miss. But I'd submit you'll find that at every club. I'm sorry if you have bad coaches on this particular team.

I do find it hard to believe your son hasn't developed since house. I've coached U9 house, and with one practice a week and a variety of skill levels/interest levels, it's quite difficult to keep developing players.

Which is why I hate tryouts for 8-year-olds. Some players are deemed worthy of twice-a-week coaching with professional staff. Some aren't. And then they start to diverge.

Well, VYS travel has not been for him what we thought it would be. As for developmental skills the kid is as far along as he was last fall. The coaches are parent volunteer coaches, we have trainers, they work with the kids maybe an hour a week. The duration of the 3 hours of practice are conducted by the parent volunteer coaches. While I respect the parent volunteer coaches and my gosh, they have given up a lot of their time to coach my son and the rest of his team mates. These coaches just do not have what it takes to build a team. I asked my son just last week why the coach played him in a certain position his response "I asked the coach to play that position so that my friend and I could play the same position but at opposite ends. REALLY??? You are telling the coaches what positions you want to play!? My son really likes soccer, no I don't think he's going to get a scholarship (it would be nice) but I know reality and it's just not going to happen. Soccer is physical and he's a high energy kid and needs it.

So my question is, why travel soccer team does your child play on and are you happy with it. Also, if you are inclined please let me know how much you are paying.

TIA!

Honestly, it sounds to me based on your description of his abilities and attitude that he might be happier playing rec than travel. You might be, too. Bonus: Rec is cheaper.

I understand where you are coming from and I would have agreed in the past... but the benefit of non-parent coaches in worth alot of money (if you have it). She has a high energy child, he needs to be challenged.

He has zero chance of playing in Europe. Don't kid yourself.

If they move to Europe he will play in Europe, how is that hard to understand. If I move to VA, my kids will play for a league in VA.

Your kid could possibly make A Virginia team because of the sheer number of different levels. The black level be worse quality than Rec.
