USNWR has separate lists for national universities and LACs. How do you compare rank from one list vs another - eg, many students who apply to Emory, Tufts which are on the “uni” list also apply to Middlebury, Bowdoin, etc.
I know there is not a set answer nor is this really important but am curious how others compare the lists. |

I know Emory is a good school, but is it really all that impressive? Its high ranking is more due to Coca Cola fortune and endowment than academics or academic reputation.
Middlebury is one of the best SLACs in the country. |
So how would you compare the two lists? Say 10-20 on the uni list is equal to what range on the SLAC list? |
| Just FYI, in case it’s helpful: Forbes ranks and doesn’t separate the LACs from the universities. It’s just all one big numerical ranking (agree with it or not). |
You don't. Why so obsessed about rankings? |
Emory is much better than Middlebury, a true shmuck would send their child to Miss if they also got into Emory. With that said to answer OP's question the top 10 LAC's would be equal to the top 30 Unis. The times/wsj ranking combines both unis and lacs into the same ranking and Williams and Amherst are just outside the top 20. |

^^Midd not miss
Typo. |
Op here Matter of fact Tufts isn't on Emory's level at all, I don't know why OP juxtaposed those two as if they were. |
| They are different animals...for instance, I drive a 911 and two of my neighbors respectively have a Tesla and Challenger Hellcat...all are fast as F@#K and fun to drive but different flavors, no two things are the same. |
|
OP here. This is very funny - only the original post above is mine.
I’m curious (not obsessed with) how people meld the 2 lists. Thanks for mentioning the forbes unified list, I’ll check it out. Also, among the students we know at BCC, Whitman and Churchill, it’s very common to apply to both Tufts and Emory (and Wash U). |
Sorry that was me, I meant to say PP but my phone autocorrects everything. I also said the quote where the top 10 LAC's are equal to the top 30 Unis. |
All that is wrong. Though grads from both schools probably know how to spell "schmuck." |
There is another thread about Tufts and they were comparing them to Amherst and Williams. It was pointed out Amherst and Williams are colleges and Tufts is a university so from a "ranking" standpoint it's hard to say which is higher or lower, not that I care, but was I was a college counselor and people care so i'm aware of rankings Somebody is really upset about Tufts, me thinks. |
It's not wrong there's a reputable ranking that combine both unis and Williams and Amherst are right outside the top 20. Maybe 50 years ago Middlebury was better but today not a chance, most teens would choose Emory. |
I see your point but don’t fully agree. I think for example that Tufts has more in common with the other NESAC schools than NYU and UC Santa Barbara, which it is tied with on the USNWR list - same with Emory being right next to UC Berkeley on USNWR (and by the way I discovered that Emory is 10 numbers ahead of Tufts in USNWR - which I find meaningless but I think the posters saying they aren’t peer schools are off base). |
