The lack of empathy for them is mind-boggling. Textbook npd, right?

The ones that went on the Today show and lied?

I think they believed her, were simply in denial their child could have done something so horrible. I can’t imagine how they must be feeling right now.

Thank you for the new vocab word.

The kidnappers made her get naked and then put $106 in her sock for the inconvenience

You are just as stupid as they are

There are some truly amazing Halloween costumes that could be taken from this.

If only it were October instead of July.

My mom likes to remind me that when she was 25, my dad was the dean of a phd program, and my mom would host the 15+ phd students and their SOs to a full seated meal at our home.

Why would she like to remind you of that? Bizarre.

I find it amazing a professor had space to sit 30 for a plated dinner. I make lots of money and couldn’t do that. Not enough china or space.

The whole story would not happen nowadays. Maybe they lived in Country Bumpkin land (where big houses are cheap?)

The average PhD program takes 5-7 years to complete. People tend to do post-docs before landing a tenure track position (in science anyway). Moving from assistant to associate professor can take 5-10 years. Add another 5-10 for those who will go on to become full professors. So no, there are not a lot of deans with 25 year old wives, unless something has gone very wrong along the way. 🤫

I was assuming college student married middle aged professor here.

Also couldn't commit enough to the con to make marks on her wrists so she said they didn't want to leave marks. Most considerate kidnappers ever.

So she dropped the phone and screamed just like in the movie Taken (that she googled)!!

To me, that doesn't matter. They had their daughter back. They should have shut up at that point. Why did they go on the show? To defend themselves and their daughter's honor - purely selfish reasons. By going on the Today show and repeating her story, they stoked fear in the community and made it even harder for victims in the future to be taken seriously. I would have sympathy if they would have kept a low profile and let this play out.

I’m with you. I feel so bad for them. They seem like really good people. I hope their community will give them some grace rather than being upset with them for Carlee’s actions.

Now about the internet! Whew. The rumors were all true! Just crazy!

Agree. I do think it was dumb for them to go to the media and continue the cray cray, but I still feel bad for them.

They probably legitimately believed her, unless she had engaged in behavior previously that would lead them to question her.

Well her life is ruined, and it will be challenging for her loved ones to forgive her. I hope that’s sufficient deterrence!

No, I think there should be criminal charges. I don't necessarily think she needs a harsh punishment, but a conviction ensures that these actions follow her. Would you want someone like, with so little regard for truth, this caring for your child or your parents? A conviction would come up on employment and licensing background checks, ensuring that this episode will be known and considered before she can be put in a position of trust.
