Carson?

Anonymous
Hi! We just moved from Potomac and are zoned for Rachel Carson Elementary. But it looks like we may be affected by redistricting \. Any Carson families here that have anythig positive to say about the school? negative feedback? Should we try to stay at Carson or be okwith zoning decisions made to send us to Dufief?

We thought it was K-5 but we just saw that there is PreK is that just by lottery? How do we apply?

Pre-K in MCPS is only for kids with special needs and kids whose family income makes them eligible for Head Start (unlikely if you just moved to Potomac).

Before someone comes on with a "Well, actually....." there are a handful of seats for typically developing peers in the special needs pre-K classrooms but those tend to go to the typically developing siblings of the kids getting services.

Rachel Carson has a local CES so if your child does well in school they may be able to join the program. The redistricting is something that has been talked about for years but I am unsure of when it is to be implemented. There is a high FARMs rate at Rachel Carson. The FARMS kids and local kids don't seem to mingle very much socially. There is a mean girls and mean boys element as is to be expected in that little area but probably true of most elementary schools. And no one calls it Carson.

Teacher here. What the above poster is referring to is "PEP" programs, specifically PEP Collaborative (I think that's the right program), which is a special needs preschool program that allows neurotypical kids to join special needs peers.

However, there IS preschool offered in some schools, which, along with head-start, is offered to income eligible families.

The FARMS kids are[b] the local kids, just like the non-FARMS kids.

They just revised the timeline last month. This is the latest info:

Resolved, That the Board of Education approve a revised boundary study timeline for the
Rachel Carson and DuFief Elementary Schools Boundary Study as a result of the adopted
one-year delay of the capital project for DuFief Elementary School, with the study to be conducted
in spring 2022, with Board of Education action scheduled for November 2022

(Which means the BOE votes on new boundaries in November 2022, and those boundaries would begin to take effect the following fall of 2023.)

If they are attending their zoned elementary school, they are local.

I don’t know why you’re trying to act like the FARMS kids at RCES aren’t local. They may not be from right next to the school, like the Kentlands & Lakelands kids are, but they’re still living in Gaithersburg.

- Someone districted to RCES who hates it when people try to make FARMS kids out to be “the other”

If you love Mormons you’ll love Rachel Carson. Their cult will swallow up your kid and he will end up thinking that the whole world acts this way.

Isn’t this a good thing since Rachel Carson is overcrowded and Dufief is not?
