If they are attending their zoned elementary school, they are local.

I mean, RCES is kind of at the edge of its own service zone, and the "bussed in" kids make sense to preserve the articulation pattern to LPMS. Basically, this isn't at all the weirdest boundary in MCPS, and it is the result of specific geographic and articulation patterns that have some internal logic.

Oh, you're referring to kids who live WAY OVER THERE in the Governor Square apartments in Gaithersburg, which is (checks map) 3.5 miles away from the school. So what, specifically, makes them "non-local"?

They're bussed there from a leftover idea that integrating students with bussing will lead to a better academic outcome for them. Test scores show thats just not true. Those kids do poorly because they come from families that don't value education. The money spent on bussing and boundary studies would be better spent on programs educating the parents on why academics matter. And then training them how to do stuff like go to the library and read to their children. But that might hurt someone's feelings and then Captain Equity Crusader wouldn't know what to get his panties in a bunch about.

And to clear it up, if anything brings the school down, its the mean girls not the non local farms kids. But I am explaining what the OP would see if they look at the metrics for the school.

Your kids will be fine at Rachel Carson or Dufief. They can get a good education at either school. Right now Rachel Carson is large and Dufief is small. The plan was to rezone 300 RCES students to Dufief. I’m not sure how that will play out post pandemic. Enrollment at RCES has been trending downward the last few years. I don’t know how many students might have left for private schools that are open for in-person. Figuring out who would get rezoned will be very tricky politically. I think it’s entirely possible it won’t end up happening any time soon.

I hear about they have a scout program, not sure if it is boy, girl or co-ed starting at k level? Are they friendly, accommodating ( flex schedule, younger sibling or special need), organized and involved?

I hear it is super crowded & chaotic (esp lunchtime), but as pp say, not sure how many families have moved to private or homeschool not coming back.

Btw, what is CES? And, my kid has IEP & zoned to this school, how are their IEP teachers?
