This Is Us -- Season 2

Why didn't the dog bark to alert them to the fire?

I lost it when Rebecca bit the candy bar. My nurse friend said that was an extremely realistic emotion

I didn't understand the little boy foster child storyline. Why was Randall there if another couple was there for the little boy?

Because he was there to take his adult daughter Tess to lunch. She was the one facilitating the placement.

And that was Randall 15-20 yrs from now and an adult Tess. A preview to season 10.

they should have at least made Randalls hair gray so that would be more clear.

It was slightly grey - not sure if this link will work.

I thought that was one of the most realistic agings of an actor that I've ever seen.

Anyone else think that this episode is a dud so far?

Hope goes to the vending machine at the hospital, Mike gets the call about Gary and tells her? She reacts... Rebecca goes to the vending machine, the doctor gives her the news about Jack, she reacts...

I guess Ken Olin, an executive producer, thought going to that well again would be successful?

LOL - good observation! Maybe he assumed that the thirty somethings that watched that show 25 years ago aren't in the same demographics that watch This Is Us!

It wasn’t boring, it just didn’t add anything to the story. We saw how Rebecca pulled it together and was strong for her family. I never had any doubt that she would do this. I never thought that she would lose it or fall into some kind of depressio. This episode could have been 10 minutes.

Normally I don’t mind the time jumps, but this episode jumped around way too much.

And I dislike teenage Kevin more and more.

I loved seeing the old doc again, Gerald McRaney is the shit.

Not at all. I cried a lot more tonight than I did two nights ago. Granted, I just attended my grandmothers funeral a week and a half ago so it is very raw. The episode from Sunday was of course amazing, and amazingly sad, but I think this one was very well done

I was a mess...All the flashbacks - ugh Jack with little Randall, putting on a tie killed me.

This show is so great and heartbreaking at the same time.

Why didn't everyone just jump out their windows?? I think that's what would have happened in the non-TV world. They were only on the second floor. Broken leg or crispy critter, you decide.

As far as the hospital scene. He should have been on O2 and had cardiac monitoring. They would have seen he was having cardiac ischemia. He may still have died since the lung damage may have been worse than what he was showing.

I thought the same thing. I know their window went out onto the porch roof, but it seemed like a lot of time wasted and dangerous to all gather in that one bedroom.

I agree. It seems like they should have gotten Rebecca and Randall out of the one room first, then Jack and Kate should have gotten out of the other room rather than fighting through the fire to go back to the master bedroom. Seemed strange. They could have done the thing with the bedsheets from Kate's room, even if it was up a little higher.

and how he calls her name & she turns around to look at him. I think he sensed something wasn’t right & wanted to look at her one last time.

Yes, and when she was in front of the vending machine, she heard him say "Becs" as he was dying, and she turned around.

I had closed captions on and it said"man"

Interesting. I'm pretty sure I heard Becs. Curious what others heard.

Lots of people on twitter heard it, too.

NP. I totally missed this!!

My closed captioning said “Ma’am”.

I did too - is it confirmed that Jack said something at that moment? I didn't hear anything.

Confirmed by Milo in an interview that he said "Becs." The closed captioning doesn't always include improvisations or things that were otherwise added after the script was "finished."

I just went back and watched - he did say "Bec?" I would never have noticed that though, if I hadn't read this thread!

Anonymous wrote:I realize this is a fictional show and I'm wasting my gray matter ... but I've been wondering if going back for the dog (and the photo albums, geez) really made the difference re: Jack's MI.

Would it have happened just from the smoke he inhaled getting Randall, getting Kate, and then getting them all out?

I have too much time on my hands!

Well the dog survived the smoke and he was in there the same time as Jack

It’s implied the extra time killed him.

Small dog low to the ground on the first floor. Very different from Jack standing up on the second floor. He would have been exposed to far more smoke.

Its also really stupid of him to go into the flames to rescue the dog. Maybe he should've waited until the firemen came to ask them to go in.

I agree. I've been fighting the urge to dissect the whole fire scene, but it's been bugging me. Where WERE the firemen?? It's not like they lived in the middle of nowhere. They had neighbors. No one noticed an entire house engulfed in flames?

Also, if the stairs were passable enough for Jack to go downstairs and get the dog and the mementos, why did everyone else have to escape from the second story window? Couldn't they all have gone down the stairs and out the front door? I guess it's supposed to add to the drama and Jack's heroics.

I agree. Where was the fire truck? Where was the ambulance? Why was Rebecca talking about driving Jack to the ER herself? Would Jack have lived with better medical care?

Have you seen a house engulfed in fire? It happens really quickly and that is why they tell everyone seconds count and to have a plan.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UYPYf1mtUs

PP here. Of course it happens quickly, but we are talking about enough time for the entire house to go up in flames, for the family to all gather in the bedroom (Jack retrieved each kid separately, remember), for all of them to escape, AND for Jack to go back in, get the dog, collect some things and come back out. How long would all of that take? 10 minutes? 15?

I was wondering where the fire trucks were, too. There were definitely siren sounds as they were standing in the front yard, though.

I was wondering why Rebecca didn’t call 911 before even getting dressed. And I also wondered why on earth the ambulance didn’t take Jack to the hospital.

I missed that anyone called 911. Who/when was it?

None of the Pearsons did, so it must have been a neighbor. That would have been the first thing I'd do!

I HATE Kate. What a selfish whiny brat! She was 17! Not 3! She knew how seriously her father takes her. I hate adult Kate even more!
