Hayfield Football Coach Fired

He didn't fire a coach who had been a perennial loser and was a terrible coach. He decided to fire a coach who had won the last three (3) National District football titles.

But that wasn’t good enough, because it is about being the best and doing whatever it takes to be the best. And whatever it took was hiring a coach who has been investigated throughout his career for recruiting, because he had won the last two state championships.

The result is a scandal (no matter the result of this appeal) that will follow Hayfield and its football team for years to come. Hayfield will do whatever it takes to win... even break the RECRUITING/PROSELYTIZING rules as described in the VHSL Handbook.

Sadly all to feed a few adult egos and all the rest suffer. As much as feel bad for kids caught up in this, the right result here will be ban upheld or even better, increase the sanctions. If not upheld, these few adults will just continue to push at detriment of everyone else around.

I feel worse for the hayfield students who didn't get to play than I feel for the ringers

I don’t know that many feel too bad for any of the Freedom people and it’s not just the kids that wanted to play football and didn’t. It has ripple effect- several of the coach traveling staff were hired as special ed teachers/assistants and they replaced security guy with coach… so when coach leaves, they all go too.

Where do you think coach and his entourage would go? Probably out of the VHSL? Howard County. Baltimore County?

Probably depends on if VHSL sanction “travels” with the coach but would assume he’d look MD

No football means we don’t get a senior night…

The high school marching bands are typically one of the most supportive of the football programs. Those kids work so hard to memorize their marching routines and music. I feel so sad for them. The cheer and dance teams too. They all get slighted now that they don’t get a senior night if the playoff ban is upheld by the VHSL and all appeals are denied.

Sounds like this was a purposeful snub bu the football coach and athletic director.

Private. If no head coaching job is open, he can help out some struggling private school coach as an assistant.

Maryland would be a long commute for the kids who live in Fredericksburg

Aren’t Charles and St Mary’s Counties just across the Nice Memorial Bridge?

I don't really know the geography of Rest of virginia. Crazy that kids were driving that far to school

This Hayfield debacle has been very unfair to the actual Hayfield players (not the transfers), the kids who followed the rules and were left behind with a skeleton team at Freedom who barely had a season, and all of Hayfield's opponents, who were playing in a rigged game.

Sounds like the VHSL has been collecting evidence for months. Its going to take the committee two days to review it all.

While not a VHSL violation, the Hayfield By 40 theme or mantra before every game always rubbed the wrong way.

I hope somebody at Lewis will step up and facilitate recognizing the band, dance, and cheer kids who got cheated out senior night by adults who knew exactly what they were doing.

It's not their job, I know, but it would be nice if someone in this whole sordid mess tried to do right by these kids.

I agree. While I highly doubt it, I hope some Lewis admins or boosters are reading this.
