Schools for Engineering major

Anonymous
Hi all, my DC was planning on majoring in physics, but after a summer internship and current job, decided that they want to switch to mechanical engineering. Problem is, a lot of their original schools don’t have good engineering programs. Based on his stats and old list of schools, could you suggest new schools

Stats:
SAT: 1550
GPA: 3.9 UW/4.32 W
8 AP Classes (5 5s and 3 4s)
Good ECs

Original List of Schools

WUSTL
NYU
Boston U
University of Chicago

College of William & Mary
Grinnell College
UVA
UC Davis

Binghamton
Stony Brook U

Thanks!

Your state flagship research University. Only apply to other state flagships if there’s a special reason - otherwise in state costs are going to beat out out-of-state costs for a similar program.

That said, I always suggest adding Purdue to the list of kids from DMV. I’m really impressed with their engineering program overall (kids don’t declare until sophomore year), they have tons of companies that recruit on-site, and give merit scholarships that bring costs close to in-state. East coast brings diversity, so I’ve found strong students get in.

Other interesting programs to look at are RIT and Case Western.

19:10 and 19:12 schools are good. Add Purdue. Is VA your state? VTech then.

I would keep UVA on the list - a solid engineering program but more options if your DC might also change mind again and want a business or other science background (not just straight Mech E).

I would look at Olin, in the Boston area.

It is a really small engineering school, but has interdisciplinary programs, and some relationships and cross-registration with Babson (next door), Wellesley and Brandeis.

Did you mean Harvey Mudd (instead of Pomona)?

Not true. My daugher is at an OOS flagship and with merit aid it is cheaper than my state flagship. She prefers the climate there, and the ranking.

Purdue is relatively cheap for OOS. It is more expensive than VaTech, but not by much.
