+1, DD graduated CS last year from UVA, got 6-7 offers over 100k. DS graduating this year with 2 offers so far and has already accepted one, both also over 100k

Doesn’t ring true.

Lol yeah these UVA boosters are really toeing the line when it comes to believability

Not sure why this is so hard to believe, though I was worried about it with the pandemic going on about our kids' prospects. However, apparently the big tech companies are doing fine during the pandemic and are still hiring like crazy. Not sure what else I can say to convince you I'm telling the truth.

Based on my experience, only a handful of UVA CS grads go on to FAANG and most go on to places like Capitol One and similar places locally in the DC metro area.

Wow. Amazing! You know all 200 computer science graduate students and all 1000 undergraduate computer science graduate students? And I bet you didn't know that the CS UVA graduate makes $20K more than the mean CS student in the U.S. Or that Capitol One is on UVA's ADVISORY BOARD and some Nova students - egads! - want to return to home!. https://engineering.virginia.edu/sites/default/files/UVAEngineering_FactsAtAGlance_2018-2019_web_v4.pdf

Don't be so defensive... no wonder people detest UVA boosters on here.

You need to learn the difference between being "defensive" (an irrational postural position taken out of insecurity) and the simple need to correct facts. If a maroon writes "Based on my experience (lolol right there), only a handful of UVA CS grads go on to FAANG . . . and then don't even know of the Board connections with Capitol One then, yes, I think the facts need to be corrected for those reading that kind of trash. I realize that UVA's student rivals are back at home and have nothing else to do but bash a school they couldn't get into (that would be UMD and Va Tech) but a sentence like that is just someone shooting off their mouth without knowing anything about the UVA Computer Science Program and/or hiring and it deserves correction. I bet you didn't know that Steve Huffman is a graduate of UVA either, did you? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Huffman

You sound like the exact a..holes that made UVA infamous.

That’s the best you students home from college can do? I didn’t even go to UVA. nor did I ever say that I did.

PP didn’t say that you did?

I doubt many of the UVA boosters actually went there. They just want to rationalize pushing their kids to cheaper public schools.

This back and forth between the pro and anti uva posters are hilarious. My kids went to uva because it's affordable and they make decent money once they graduated. I don't care if people think it's a cheap public school, making $100k+ coming out of a cheap public school is a win in my book...I'll take it.
Good luck to your kid and his/her expensive private school. Glad it's worth it for you.

UVA is a perfectly fine school.

UVA boosters are obnoxious though and ruin many threads. Just like this one which was about engineering of all things.

I think the crux of this tangent is about if uva engineering is any good, and the success of its graduates seems to indicate so...but apparently some people care more about the reputation and cachet of expensive/exclusivity of a better known engineering school

Rich hearing about how UVA folks don’t care about prestige. Hoo boy.

I actually think VT is a better engineering school, base on the curriculum and not so much about job prospects. However, we prefer UVA just because it's closer to NoVA and only 2 hours drive from home.
If VT was closer, then we wouldn't care whichever school the kids attended. Some people do approach the decision base on practicallity and not prestige. We approach college as an investment and the ROI would be the same if they had attended UVA or VT. Paying for OOS big name school is not practical.
Anonymous
Yeah, VT is much better in engineering that UVA. The difference has increased in recent years.

UVA should be quarantined into an isolated section to stop the contamination of crass and misinformation.

Sounds like a bitter parent who’s upset that their incredibly gifted entitled child didn’t get in.

Interesting you think everyone is applying for UVA, and if they don't get in, their parents will become angry.

OMG can we have just one thread that doesn't devolve into an argument about UVA?
