+1, DD graduated CS last year from UVA, got 6-7 offers over 100k. DS graduating this year with 2 offers so far and has already accepted one, both also over 100k

Doesn’t ring true.

Lol yeah these UVA boosters are really toeing the line when it comes to believability

Not sure why this is so hard to believe, though I was worried about it with the pandemic going on about our kids' prospects. However, apparently the big tech companies are doing fine during the pandemic and are still hiring like crazy. Not sure what else I can say to convince you I'm telling the truth.

Based on my experience, only a handful of UVA CS grads go on to FAANG and most go on to places like Capitol One and similar places locally in the DC metro area.

Physics = theoretical

Mechanical engineering = practical

And then there is applied & engineering physics which is both and doubly hard.

Wow. Amazing! You know all 200 computer science graduate students and all 1000 undergraduate computer science graduate students? And I bet you didn't know that the CS UVA graduate makes $20K more than the mean CS student in the U.S. Or that Capitol One is on UVA's ADVISORY BOARD and some Nova students - egads! - want to return to home!. https://engineering.virginia.edu/sites/default/files/UVAEngineering_FactsAtAGlance_2018-2019_web_v4.pdf

This whole thread gives some interesting insight into the mental stability of the students/families...yikes!

Don't be so defensive... no wonder people detest UVA boosters on here.

Why would anybody go to Harvard and study CS?

Ur... Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg?

Zuckerber's major was psychology and Gates' major was pre-law and both dropped out.

UVA engineering is not that good. McIntire yes, Certain majors in the college, yes, CS no. Even among the public schools, Michigan, GT, UIUC, Purdue, UCB, UCLA, UT, Wisconsin and many others have better CS programs. We regret that we were too cheap to send DC to a better ranked private.

I know plenty of TJ grads who studied CS at UVA and regretted the the limited opportunities available through the UVA college recruitment for CS graduates.

I love UVA, but other schools are better at CS, for sure. A couple privates yeah but several big state schools are great at CS.

Which privates would you have targeted if financing wasn't an issue? Just curious as to which privates you deem on-par or better for CS than the publics you listed.

Interesting, DD got offers from Disney, Microsoft, Yelp, Akuna, Capital One, Appian when she graduated in May with a CS. Capital One was the lowest offer just under 100k, the others were more...and all has some sort of additional stocks/performance/sign on bonuses. Son wanted to stay in NoVA when graduating next summer and only interviewed with the local companies, and has already accepted one of the offers.
