How often and bad is this obsession at clubs and teams?

I've never seen it.

We were at a club like this. It was terrible. Certain kids were given all sorts of extra opportunities, constantly featured on social media and asked to guest play with older teams while others sit on the bench for entire games. The same is true of the dream teams that are regularly featured on social media. We have been at several clubs like this.

Maybe I just really lucked out with my DDs clubs, but they've never had a team where someone rides the bench like that. I don't understand why a kid would want to come to a game and not play, or why a parent would wake up at the ass crack of dawn and drive for two hours to watch their kid not play and then drive another two hours to hear their kid complain about not paying, all while paying money for the privilege

Have seen this with Olney.

Yes-- at a team like that now. In fact, other players on the team are constantly told "Your only job is to feed the ball to [chosen-one]". Wish I knew beforehand that the "developmental opportunities" publicized so frequently on their social media were only for the "in crowd".

Recently, along these lines, there was a Loudoun boy's team that just focused on getting the ball to their [best player]. Every thing was play it to {Jimmy}. Telling the GK...when you get it, give Jimmy about 5 second and then you punt it to him. Wingers play in to Jimmy. Mid's play up to Jimmy. Loudoun is pretty much dominating the game. The other team isn't doing much but since the other team is marking Jimmy pretty tightly, Loudoun isn't scoring either, but Loudoun is up by 2 goals. They never took Jimmy out of the game once. Jimmy scores his 3rd goal with 1 minute left in the game. The coach ceremoniously subs off Jimmy and stands up and is clapping for him as he comes off praising his "hat trick". It was awkward.

OH SO MUCH!! I have a U16 and U13...I will tell you that the younger ones usually don't pan out. Those little superstars. We are seeing it right now on our U13 team. The Club bent over backward for this kid and his family since U8. He is still playing up and so far over his head and 3 feet shorter than every player on the field. He can barely run anymore and dribbles into the ground. He is having an identity crisis of sorts and it's really sad to watch. He doesn't know what to do now that he is no longer 'the star'.

Coaches do players a disservice when they do this crap.

We have been at a few different Clubs do to talent differences in age groups over the past 8 years with our kids and some Clubs are just plain awful at it. We have seen some successful Clubs where I can honestly say a player is all he/she is cracked up to be and continues to be so over time...it's also the way the parents raise them. There is a modesty and hard work ethic with the parents as well.

The Clubs that like to have the TDs and coaches *sses kissed will hype up at family and player in return...thinking they have the next Messi in their midst. They.never.do. The parents are also to blame as they also build the kid up well beyond his ability.

The kids that do the best over the long run never think they are good enough. Even if they scored 10 goals and played an outstanding game, they will obsess over a mistake nobody ever noticed. The self-deprecation often isn't noticed in the younger years in favor of the 'bravado and brashness' of the flashy players.

Stick with it. It really works itself out after puberty.

OP is the parent that says the players don’t pass the ball to my kid
