Saw this in another thread here

...The Clubs that laud and fawn over certain kids only on their team are the worst. A Coach sets the tone on how a 'team' comes together.
moment everyone truly realizes obsession

I’ve seen it, the backlash and the fallout. Nice job coaches and clubs!
OH SO MUCH!! I have a U16 and U13...I will tell you that the younger ones usually don't pan out. Those little superstars. We are seeing it right now on our U13 team. The Club bent over backward for this kid and his family since U8. He is still playing up and so far over his head and 3 feet shorter than every player on the field. He can barely run anymore and dribbles into the ground. He is having an identity crisis of sorts and it's really sad to watch. He doesn't know what to do now that he is no longer 'the star'. Coaches do players a disservice when they do this crap. We have been at a few different Clubs do to talent differences in age groups over the past 8 years with our kids and some Clubs are just plain awful at it. We have seen some successful Clubs where I can honestly say a player is all he/she is cracked up to be and continues to be so over time...it's also the way the parents raise them. There is a modesty and hard work ethic with the parents as well. The Clubs that like to have the TDs and coaches *sses kissed will hype up at family and player in return...thinking they have the next Messi in their midst. They.never.do. The parents are also to blame as they also build the kid up well beyond his ability. The kids that do the best over the long run never think they are good enough. Even if they scored 10 goals and played an outstanding game, they will obsess over a mistake nobody ever noticed. The self-deprecation often isn't noticed in the younger years in favor of the 'bravado and brashness' of the flashy players. Stick with it. It really works itself out after puberty.
