Can you be charged with a hate crime if the hate crime is against yourself?

His hate crime was not against himself. In carrying out this hoax, he perpetuated a hate crime against all Trump supporters and President Trump in particular.

It WAS hate crime.

Except the victims are Trump supporters everywhere.

The most interesting thing about this story is that it really shows how technology has made it virtually impossible to get away with something like this, that is, the authorities really want to put the resources into tracking it all down. Cameras are everywhere--they have footage of the Nigerians purchasing the stuff they used for the false attack.

He's not going to be charged with a hate crime for smearing Trump or his supporters. Don't be silly. The FBI might hit him for using the mail to send himself a threatening letter with a crushed up white powdery substance (later found to be Tylenol). Using the mail to conduct a terroristic threat might draw federal charges.

The silver lining is that this hoax really shows that simply because the media can put together a compelling narrative by selective presentation of alleged facts, doesn't mean that presentation has any connection at all with objective reality.

It's Plato's Cave all over again.

Passive consumption of images and sounds presented from a television screen or computer screen or phone screen is a losing proposition. The notion that the corporations serving up this daily diet of images and sounds adhere to some abstract notion of journalistic objectivity is naive.

Actually the most fitting punishment would be for Smollett to be seated on stage for the duration of the 2020 Democrat Convention wearing a dunce cap.

He hates himself. Who has all of that anger - enough anger to self-sabotage?

It's almost sad in a way and definitely pathetic.

I wonder if they'll put him on a watch list for self-harm. I think once he faces his wrongdoing, he won't be able to handle the consequences.

The lying criminal also hates lots of other people. Shame on him and his ilk.
