That's a Class 4 felony in Chicago. Punishable by up to 18 months in jail and probabtion up to 3 years.

The most interesting thing about this story is that it really shows how technology has made it virtually impossible to get away with something like this, that is, the authorities really want to put the resources into tracking it all down. Cameras are everywhere--they have footage of the Nigerians purchasing the stuff they used for the false attack.

The FBI might hit him for using the mail to send himself a threatening letter with a crushed up white powdery substance (later found to be Tylenol). Using the mail to conduct a terroristic threat might draw federal charges.

The silver lining is that this hoax really shows that simply because the media can put together a compelling narrative by selective presentation of alleged facts, doesn't mean that presentation has any connection at all with objective reality.

I know. But in most cases, you hate others - to this level - b/c you hate yourself. not saying he should be let off easy . . . But the guy isn't right in the head. He hates himself. self-loathing
