My 2 cents - he should not be coaching anyone 12 and younger. he can be scary and very intimidating, which makes kids scared of him and they sometimes shutdown because of it. stay away from him if you can. My kid is way happier with in Arlington. |
Well, it looks like the tides have turned, on page 60 you would have thought he was some kind of soccer saint. |
I don't know this coach, but we have had some coaches at our kids' club (Bethesda) that were similarly divisive. We are a family that can easily overlook yelling and extreme intensity from coaches who care deeply and are great at developing kids. Other families are more interested in ensuring a positive environment for their kids. Just comes down to the family values. |
Amen. Much rather be in this type of situation. I don't care much for Coaches who think they are "soccer gods" |
I can't disagree more, my kids started at age 7 with Quan and they can't get enough of the training. He is direct so I you are raising a snowflake, you are screwed. But I've never seen him be mean to anyone and I've sat through hundreds of his training sessions. They normally operate out of NOVA field house and they are surrounded by parents, if he was truly mean to the kids someone would have called him out. If you don't like him, don't go because they have no shortage of players trying to get into the program, but from my experience it is top quality training and all the coaches have been excellent. |
There is nothing divisive about Quan. You have one or two folks complaining and one of the people didn't even know how to spell his name yet Quan supposedly coached his son. Quan is a good coach and a good man. This doesn't mean he is perfect or even everyones cup of tea but my kids, and the other families I know couldn't be more happy with the training at HP Elite. |
That's funny, I've found that the real screamers at BSC care far more about winning than they do developing kids. It's the coaches that promote a positive environment that inspire the kids to improve. |
Quan is awesome, but his twin Khan is borderline evil. He makes the kids play bare foot on glass! |
We've been at Bethesda for years and years with multiple kids, and I can't generalize about the temperaments of the coaches who have helped our kids the most. They have ranged from foul-mouthed yellers to zen types at the extremes. I think at all clubs it's extremely important to make your own assessment because even very reasonable people can have vastly different reactions to coaches. |
Question here. Do you mean ID sessions like a college ID session? Or an ID session to get into the DA program? I doubt it's the former, since your player is a U12, but I'm just curious as to what you meant. |
Just because a coach is passionate and has volume does not mean that they don't promote a positive environment for their players... I've seen coaches who are "yellers" but every word that comes out of their mouth is encouragement, motivation, recognition, direction, etc. In my opinion and experience that's a stellar environment, the coach clearly cares and is passionate, and players feed off that and are just as passionate, which helps them step up their game. Let's not forget that soccer is a game of emotion and we're trying to develop soccer players, not wallflowers. As for Quan, I've heard nothing but good things about him and PWSI teams tend to be quite successful and proactive in their game. Surely he's had a hand in that success, and he knows more than some anon who clearly just dislikes him for personal reasons. |
ID Session = Tryout |

Another Quan fan here.
Quan is pretty direct and blunt. This may turn some parents/kids off. However, personally, I’d rather know what the coaches are thinking about my child and make decisions accordingly versus having the coach tell me everything is roses - e.g. I appreciate him telling me if my child is going to get playing time vs being a bench warmer. It’s my decision whether to leave him on the team or seek another team. Sometimes some of the best coaches (and teachers) are not the warmest of personalities. They push the kids outside of their comfort zones to achieve the next levels. It’s never fun when your going through it, but you always appreciate later. That said, I have never seen Quan yell/scream at the kids. |
I've always appreciated the training at HP Elite but have heard more than a few coaches express disappointment at some of the bad habits learned there and reinforced by lots of reps. Could be just a jealous reaction, but the more I hear it, the more credence I give it. I am not close enough or soccer savvy enough to observe it myself. |
