So I am thinking about using my Grandmother's address to send my kid to DCPS...

Sorry to throw a goat under the bridge, but seems interesting that this would come up after the lottery and all the publicity about how crazy it was this year.

Off-topic, but what? This made me laugh, but I don't think I know what exactly it means. I'm sure I've never heard it before. "Throw a goat under the bridge?"

Yes OP. Make your decision on the fact that you're committing fraud, breaking the law, and will be caught, outed, and humiliated. In fact you could lose your job too.

You know, I think the fake address thing has gone on so long in DCPS, that it's always been a take-for-granted kind of thing. I drive by a NE elementary school and see the parade of cars from Maryland dropping off children each day. In the past, I think everyone shrugged and figured it filled the seats in the school.

Things are changing though. This school, which was 10% "in-boundary" students just a few years ago, now has a wait list for the PS3 and PK program. Parents who live in the neighborhood, actually would like to use the school, at least for the 3 and 4 year old program.

While the women at the school's front desk don't really have the time or inclination to follow up on the falsified addresses, you can bet that there are parents in the neighborhood who will. I can't say that I blame them either.

If she rents from or moves in with her grandmother, and gives that address to her employer, gets her bills sent there, she is not in violation of DCPS's residency requirements.

If she's already at her grandmother's so often, wouldn't she be in violation of her county's residency requirements?

It's all about which jurisdiction the child's guardian pays income tax to. If the mom is paying income tax to MD or VA, she's not a DC resident.

Read my post. I said if she gives the DC address to her employer. So of course she'd be in the DC tax system.

10:15 - What NE DC school is that? I live in NE and am looking for options for my son who will be eligible for 3yo programs in the next lottery. I didn't know any NE DC schools that were that popular, but I'm just beginning my search.

I'm not the 10:15 poster- but perhaps she's talking about Maury which would certainly meet that description. Two other schools to watch are Miner and Ludlow Taylor.

If, if, if . . . OP never said she was moving in with granny, paying bills at granny's address, and/or paying DC income taxes. If she performed your ifs then no she would not be in violation of DCPS requirements.

She is not in violation of her maryland residency requirements as she is a TAX PAYING RESIDENT of Maryland.

Langdon ES also has a PS Montessori program

14:47 The original question was if, if, if and I posted what she could do to meet the requirements.

I'm the NE parent who wanted recs -- thanks for mentioning Langdon 13:59. What's your experience w/ it?

This was a while ago now but I am also clueless about the "throw a goat under the bridge" thing. What does it mean? A google search turned up this thread as the top hit!

I hated Langdon-pulled my child out 3 months into the school year. You can check the other forums for info on the school.

I've never heard the expression before either, but I love it. I assume it means -- feed the troll. After all, trolls eat goats, trolls live under bridges . . .

I am 14:59 who mentioned Langdon. My child was in the Montessori program and I very much liked the curriculum, what DS learned, and his teacher. I did not however like the turmoil of DCPS and removed my child into a charter school. The school is very dark and the afterschool program is very undesireable. In addition DCPS, over the strenuous objections of parents and teachers alike, decided to remove foreign language from the curriculum. That alone was a deal breaker for me. Perhaps if I lived in Topeka Kansas or Kalamazoo Michigan I would not care so much for a second language. But, my family resides in an international city, albeit small and provincial, and language was important to DH and myself. If none of that is important to you then you should give it some consideration. Langdon lost its language program, but it did include STEM.
