Why do you bother responding to this person. She is a lost cause, mired in her inability to reason. The mere fact that she would twist and turn your more than charitable, but not plausible, explanation as vindication of Fenty bypassing the OOB process and thus sticking his middle finger in the air to all other parents, is reason enough to ignore this poster forever more. It is like spitting in the wind with her. |
I was actually the one who wrote the first post against the Fenty bashing and haven't been on this site since. I've got to say I am amazed at the responses here. I frankly don't care how his kids got into Lafayette. He's the mayor and should be able to send his kids to any school he wants in the city by picking up a phone and dialing if he want to....that's the least a mayor of any city in this country should be "entitled" to. Have some respect for crying out loud.
To me, there seems to be a lack of perspective joined with a crowd mentality of people jumping on the bandwagon with not much to stand on. But I must admit, complaining does make for more interesting conversation around the water cooler, or playground when the discussion gets boring. It's like what's going on with Obama. He campaigns for change, you vote for him, he actually does what he says he's going to do, and he gets criticized for it. Georgy Porgy on the other hand does nothing productive during his tenure, but shows his face at the World Trade Center after 9/11 and that's what people remember him for. My father use to remind me.."be a mean son of a bitch and then do one nice thing -everyone will love you. Be and fair and good, then do one thing off the mark and you will be considered the worst SOB alive" It appals me that for someone who has spent his term trying to do good, he is being slammed for not sharing his baseball tickets with the City Council. How the hell does this affect you or me? I mean really. And he's getting slammed for sending his kids to public school. Really? Is that it? Is that the extent of the "corruption"? Let's put this into perspective. I am a DCPS mother to be ...my son is going to be (hopefully) in pre-K next year. We do not live in-boundary for JKLM and we have not been accepted anywhere yet. Does it suck not to know where your kid will be going to school? Yes. But this horrible state of affairs is the result of prior administrators. If we undo what has been started, it will be one step forward and two back. If we stand around complaining about the litttle stuff, the big stuff will suffer. The numbers are getting better. That's progress. I've got better things to do than nitpick. And FWIW I am astounded that you take the City Paper at its' word rather than for entertainment. It's as self satisfyingly radical as the Village Voice. |
...and please don't flame....there are typos above. Try to overlook. |
****SNORE***** another perfectly good venom-laden thread ruined by rabid Fenty and Rhee haters. And, ****YAWN**** I'm getting so tired of parents complaining that their kids didn't get into the preschool of their choice (21:17, I don't mean you). We have this great system that actually gives us free child care starting at age 3 (plus minimal $225 per month after care). Anyone with a tad of motivation can find a great spot for their kid for PS/PK, and all we can do is complain that they didn't get in (at age 3) to the JKLMO schools. I guess we should all quit in high dudgeon and move to Virginia. Oh wait, then we'd have to pay for child care. Guess we'd better fake an address in the city and move our kid back in.... |
Really? My soon-to-be three-year-old is low enough on the waitlist for our INBOUNDS school that I will be paying daycare for at least another year, if not two. And our waitlist positions are even lower on OOB schools, all of which are East of the Park, thank you very much. Right now I am crossing my fingers for the charter school lotteries, but given our experience in lotteries this year, I figure that's a lost cause too. In fact, given my recent experience with the PS/OOB lottery, I found the OP's post somewhat hilarious. As if faking an address to be in my neighborhood would help you in any way, at least for PS/PK .... Nor do I condone fraud, particularly if some of the certainly adorable preschoolers who are taking up seats in our inbounds school actually live in PG County. I've been paying DC income taxes for nearly twenty years ... but my kid still doesn't haven't a seat for next year. And god knows how they are going to handle all the inbounds kids who have a right to go to that school in two years. Much less any additional children whose loser parents have the chutzpah to fraudulently claim a DC address. |
I have never known a parent to not get their kid in somewhere for 3 & 4. In addition to the programs at the publics, there are the 3 & 4 year old only programs (Appletree, Bridges, Centronia), and motivated parents get their kids in. Also, getting elementary schools to increase preschool slots is possible if enough parents commit to sending their kids there. Francis-Stevens is in the process of opening up another PS3 classroom, for example, due to higher-than-expected enrollment.
But, I just think that everyone has quickly lost sight of the fact that we are blessed to HAVE preschool for free, even if getting in is a little stressful. My sister in Michigan is green with envy. So, I guess I have a hard time getting all worked up about not getting in - first, everyone eventually I knew eventually did get in somewhere (even those with really bad / scary lottery numbers), and second, PS-3 and PK are not yet guaranteed and we're lucky to have even the option. We are lucky to have a lot of valid choices. |
Second that post 20:56...a number of friends who went through this before me said not to worry so much, they and other people moved a LOT on the waitlist on both public and charter schools before they ended up where they are. That's assuming you didn't apply to ONLY ridiculously competitive OOB schools, and of course this was a year/2 years ago.
I can't stop coming back to this thread, it's like a train wreck I can't stop watching! |
