DCPS Double Down on Travel Policy

We just traveled to visit vaccinated family - drove, didn’t eat anywhere indoors, didn’t take the kids into any indoor public places (except the occasional bathroom along the road, and then we were masked). The area we visited had similar vaccination rates as DC.

Then they attended summer acceleration under strict orders not to mention the trip. Sorry, DCPS!

I feel for you. Sounds pretty safe.

We've decided NOT to travel so our kids don't have to lie. That too is an option.

Can you vouch for the rest of the travelers going out of the DMV?

Why are you such a lapdog, and do you fear that your children will lose respect for you once they understand how pathetic you are?

This is why we can’t have 100% in person school. Because there are so many people who won’t follow the measures designed to keep people safe. I’m going to send this thread to OSSE.

Nothing about this policy keeps ANYONE safe.

Other states do not have these policies!

Of course it does. If you’re going to florida and mixing with cousins Larla and Larlo who are in school with no mask requirements you’re more likely to catch and then spread COVID. If it’s so important to see Larla and Larlo you can keep your kids out of school for 10 days.

Go ahead! Maybe they will realize how pointless their policy is and change it. Or are you expecting them to switch to hybrid because of some anonymous posters said they won’t observe it? But whatever makes you feel like you did something!

PP, there is absolutely nothing - zero - that anyone on this thread or indeed any individual parent or teacher can do to influence OSSE. You are tilting at windmills.

What you need to realize is that you simply cannot control what people do. You cannot force everyone to share your low level of risk tolerance. After 1.5 years of this, people are going to live their lives, some more and some less cautiously. And not everybody who doesn’t share your risk averse mindset is a selfish asshole. People got vaccinated, kids are at relatively low risk, vaccines are widely available for the vulnerable. Hopefully people won’t go out partying maskless in Florida or wherever vaccination levels are low and spread is rampant. But short of putting an ankle brace on every kid, you won’t know if they traveled, and OSSE already knows that, they don’t need you to alert them. You also don’t know if they behave recklessly right here in the DMV. If you are uncomfortable with this lack of control, you might want to keep your kids home. Although for their sake I hope you won’t.

It's so goofy to me that we have all of these kids with parents in Wards 7 and 8 that are unvaccinated -- and over 12 kids that are not vaccinated -- and we are worried about this travel policy.

Also, do you really, really think any teacher in Wards 7 or 8 is going to send a kid home for breaking the travel rule? Please.

Regardless of anyone's views on what should require a quarantine, what is DCPS's policy for what happens to kids who are required to quarantine? That is a lot of school to miss if DCPS is no longer offering a school-based virtual option.

(I happen to agree that a travel-based quarantine is stupid unless the Mayor also decides to prevent visitors from states outside Md and Va. I do think that if a student has a family member at home who is covid-positive, for example, that should require a quarantine. But is that going to be an excused absense? And how will the student make up work?)

Unless DCPS has a plan for what happens to the quarantined students, there is no plan.

So you’re okay with my kid going to a 3-day basketball tournament in MD playing indoor sports without masks going back to school but think keeping my daughter out of school after being with her vaccinated grandma in NC makes everyone more safe?

It’s not evidence based either. There are many states with higher vaccination rates and lower community spread than MD and VA.

You're so full of it. People like you are the reason why we are here now in this position. I wonder how many of the 600,000 dead from COVID had your thoughts. You were just lucky I guess, but COVID and karma have a funny way of coming back to bite.

Can you also stress the part about how the rules make no sense?

This is getting stupid, if the point really is public health. There are unvaccinated parents rolling around to bars without leaving DC, not bothering with masks, going to indoor parties…and that’s fine. But god forbid a parent drives to visit vaccinated Nana in Delaware.
