DCPS Double Down on Travel Policy

Anonymous
And let’s be clear that the people hurt by that kind of draconian policy are kids, who typically do not make decisions to travel.

But it’s just like DCPS to let the kids suffer.

But if this is really a thing it should be dcps-wide policy in the chancellor's email, publicized by DCPS city-wide. Not left up to individual schools to either mention or not. That is ridiculous. That some people are saying that their school is enforcing it strictly and others have never heard of it in the same school district is so outrageous. Especially when the policy is so stupid and ineffectual..

Our achool not only sent out a reminder that it will be strictly enforced they actually doubled down and explicitly said that there will be zero instruction for kids in quarantine.

It’s like…did an angry teenager wrote this policy? This extremely punitive policy will only increase non compliance.

Yup. We opted in for testing last year and followed all the precautions. Not doing that this year. Can't wait until a class gets sent home for a positive test. It's going to be a doozy of a time.

This is making things worse. Just because one student cheats on a test, doesn't make it OK for you to cheat. Just follow the rule and keep everyone safe. I'm going to allow my kids to be randomly tested because it is the right thing to do as a parent for one's child, and because of people like you.

Explain to me how this rule increases safety in the context of the freedoms and permissions that adults in the DMV currently have.

Exactly. It's like telling someone they can have ice cream, cotton candy, and cookies, but no cake - that's completely different because sugar is bad for you so NO CAKE!!!

If you travel south to any number of shitshow states, you are more likely to contract Covid. Mystery solved.

Montgomery County has no travel restrictions for school? DC isn’t an island. I’m so confused by how this policy does anything at all.

We’re going to ignore this rule and opt out of testing.

How do you like them apples, Karen?

That’s not even remotely true. There’s no evidence that travel, in of itself, leads to an increased chance of COVID.

Also even if I accept this as truth, then ban travel to a specific number of "shitshow states." It's not a case for banning travel to everywhere outside the DMV.

Agreed. There's a huge difference in traveling to MA or VT where vaccinations are higher and cases are lower than DC and SW VA where they're they're the opposite.

This is unfairly punitive to people who aren't legally allowed to be vaccinated right now.

Then schools are going to get shut down and you’ll only have yourself to blame.

DP. No, schools will be less likely to shut down if OP’s hypothetical asymptomatic infection goes undetected and doesn’t spread.

Not to mention people can still travel without kids and then give it to them when they get home.
