my work is essential and we employ close to 1000 employees, 80% are black. we recently received the email to get the vaccine where they set up a clinic for us. 12% got it. They set up another 6% more got it.

That is the realty.

Even in MoCo, with all their efforts to prioritize POC? Where are they going wrong?

I don't think the disparity is as large in MoCo but bear in mind Hogan only gives a small share of doses to county health departments, as you know many MoCo residents are traveling out of county to state run mass vax sites (which just exacerbates the statewide inequity - not blaming those people but Hogan should really be making sure people in PG and Baltimore can actually use the mass vax sites) or snagging appointments at Giant/CVS/Safeway.

(I’m not asking in a combative way or to be a jerk) How can Hogan make sure PG residents use the mass vaccination sites? I watch his press conferences and from what I understand is there are several sites in PG that are exclusively for PG residence that are located at churches, community centers as well as the health departments. I also think there have been days set apart specifically for county residence at six flags. To encourage more poc people getting vaccinated, there are campaigns specifically geared towards those communities featuring come in at black and Hispanic members advocating for the vaccine.

Well it sounds like you think those efforts have been effective/enough, but the data don't show that.

DP. What else, specifically, should the state be doing? I know of several non-tech savvy older people who were able to get appointments at the six flags site over the phone. And when the state only sets up two mass vax sites in the area, of course residents will come from other counties.

Two of the primary goals from a public health perspective are to 1) vaccinate as many people as possible, and 2) vaccinate as many vulnerable/high risk as possible. When your vulnerable/at risk population is eager to participate, as most elderly are, you can accomplish both goals at once. But when the vulnerable/at risk are hesitant and need some extra attention, it slows down goal #1. Conversely, if you abdicate any responsibility to reach out to the hesitant, it slows down goal #2. It’s a balancing act to figure out how much to prioritize one goal over the expense of the other.

I've already answered your question, and I'm not going to keep going round and round while you insist Hogan is doing enough and I explain that the data clearly show he is not. I'm not sure you have actually, you just said Hogan should be doing more. I think Hogan should have implemented some of the measures EARLIER, but I'm not sure what else he should be doing NOW. Limit the mass vax sites to ONLY PG and Baltimore residents I guess? Door to door campaigns like in SE DC?

He needs to allocate more doses to initiatives like the mobile clinics and setting aside doses for PG residents. Do I really need to spell that out for you? This isn't rocket science. If you have hundreds of thousands if doses and you allocate 100 here and 100 there to a mobile clinic, that really doesn't move the needle much.

I just think your Hogan hate is blinding you to what is happening now. Is it perfect? No. I don't think there are any states that have run this perfectly. You have to remember too, we are waiting for vaccines from the Federal side.

I also think there have been days set apart specifically for county residence at six flags. To encourage more poc people getting vaccinated, there are campaigns specifically geared towards those communities featuring come in at black and Hispanic members advocating for the vaccine.

Well it sounds like you think those efforts have been effective/enough, but the data don't show that.

DP. What else, specifically, should the state be doing? I know of several non-tech savvy older people who were able to get appointments at the six flags site over the phone. And when the state only sets up two mass vax sites in the area, of course residents will come from other counties.

Two of the primary goals from a public health perspective are to 1) vaccinate as many people as possible, and 2) vaccinate as many vulnerable/high risk as possible. When your vulnerable/at risk population is eager to participate, as most elderly are, you can accomplish both goals at once. But when the vulnerable/at risk are hesitant and need some extra attention, it slows down goal #1. Conversely, if you abdicate any responsibility to reach out to the hesitant, it slows down goal #2. It’s a balancing act to figure out how much to prioritize one goal over the expense of the other.

You want to take him at his word that it's the fault of POC for not wanting shots, go ahead, ignore the data and anecdotes that clearly show that is not the case. I'm not sure you have actually, you just said Hogan should be doing more. I think Hogan should have implemented some of the measures EARLIER, but I'm not sure what else he should be doing NOW. Limit the mass vax sites to ONLY PG and Baltimore residents I guess? Door to door campaigns like in SE DC?

He needs to allocate more doses to initiatives like the mobile clinics and setting aside doses for PG residents. Do I really need to spell that out for you? This isn't rocket science. If you have hundreds of thousands if doses and you allocate 100 here and 100 there to a mobile clinic, that really doesn't move the needle much.

Sounds like it needs to be spelled out to the state. Have you reached out to them to build a more robust mobile clinic effort?

For anyone with transport, it is not all that difficult to get appointments at either the M&T or six flags sites. Just call.

I just think your Hogan hate is blinding you to what is happening now. Is it perfect? No. I don't think there are any states that have run this perfectly. You have to remember too, we are waiting for vaccines from the Federal side.

There are plenty of states that are doing better than MD on vaccines. I don't like Hogan, I think he's racist and incompetent and I'm glad he'll be out of office soon. I'm not sure on what basis anybody could say he's a successful governor. Maybe that's why there are so many desperate pro-Hogan posts on DCUM.

Hogan is the only Republican I vote for. It's a good balance to the far-left politics in MoCo. It was Hogan that nudged MCPS to finally start reopening. The mass vax sites are pretty well run from what I've heard (my parents went there). It's not perfect, but imagine if Elrich was governor -- we'd be way behind since the guy can't lead or make tough decisions at all.

my work is essential and we employ close to 1000 employees, 80% are black. we recently received the email to get the vaccine where they set up a clinic for us. 12% got it. They set up another 6% more got it.

That is the realty.

What a lovely anecdote that completely ignores the data and evidence that plenty of Black people in Maryland

I don't think the disparity is as large in MoCo but bear in mind Hogan only gives a small share of doses to county health departments, as you know many MoCo residents are traveling out of county to state run mass vax sites (which just exacerbates the statewide inequity - not blaming those people but Hogan should really be making sure people in PG and Baltimore can actually use the mass vax sites) or snagging appointments at Giant/CVS/Safeway.

Wife is now scheduled for vaccination. Thanks again, state of MD. Absolutely ZERO thanks to the Montgomery County and the disaster that is their rollout for the vaccine. I have now gotten the vax, and my wife is good to go. Zero leadership from MoCo. As expected, too many bureaucrats who get in the way of everything in MoCo, because they just HAVE to try to show up the gov.

Thank God Hogan finally consented to open a max vaxx site in MoCo.

My dh and I spent 4 hours getting to and from Six Flags yesterday, from Silver Spring. Rush hour traffic plus an hour and a half wait to get the shot. Just for one of us. The site was well run, but why wasn't a max site rolled out in the most populous country in Maryland to start with, along with the Six Flags site?

You got a vaccine from the state because the state controls the doses and sent a bunch to the mass vax sites. The county has been administering all of their doses, just not to you. I know that's frustrating, but it's also incredibly selfish and stupid to assume that because you specifically did not get an appointment that means they did a terrible job. They only get a small portion of the doses that the state has.
