13 y.o. girl sexually assaulted in Rock Creek Park trail in Kensington earlier this evening (March9)

The best evidence that our country more or less just accepts such assaults against women is the huge backlog in untested rape kits.

If you are not aware of this issue, google it. You will be appalled.

Such jurisdictions are ABSOLUTELY enabling rapists to walk free among us, and rape again. It is SUCH a statement that our society won't make this investment to keep their daughters safe. But again, if you think the "solution" is teaching girls to stay inside and walk in pairs...why spend money on testing rape kits.

This is acknowledging the reality of the world we live in. It is possible to keep these two ideas in your head at the same time: 1) women and girls should not have to worry about their safety at all times and it is not their fault when men attack them, and 2) men often attack girls and women after dark, especially on trails, so it is not safe to be there. I wish it were safe and worry for my daughters as they become teens. I also am a feminist. But I don’t let them walk in parks after dark, nor do I encourage them to feel safe under those circumstances. I also will tell them not to get wasted around strange men, not to get into cars with men under many circumstances, etc. That is not victim blaming. It is living in reality. Until men provide otherwise, we have to assume they will take advantage. It’s not our fault, but we can’t make these situations safe, so we have to continue to avoid them. It’s infuriating.

Again, nobody is saying that we shouldn’t teach our kids about this stuff and I do talk about it.

However, this is a 13 year old girl. Maybe she was heading home at the time, and ran a little late. It was barely past sunset, so it’s not like she was roaming around late at night.

Not to mention that some 13 year olds make mistakes. Does she ‘deserve’ to be groped? No way.

Who said she deserved it? I said it’s part of the sad reality of this world. She certainly didn’t deserve it. Believing in reality is not the same thing as thinking things are as they SHOULD be.

Montgomery County needs to come down hard on this guy. And all the rest like him.

That is the issue. We let men do this and get away with it, so they do it more.

This is not an issue of a girl walking in a park by herself. Girls should be able to do that.

This is an issue of men learning that they can grope women and face no consequences.

Totally agree. And I agree rape kits should be processed. And that sexual assault and rape sentences should be longer and not offer parole opportunities. As of today, it remains dangerous to be in the park at night. My views on policy don't change that. I don't think people should text and drive and speed through crosswalks in my neighborhood. I think people who do this should be punished heavily. That doesn't mean I walk into the street in front of cars because of how I wish people would drive and how I wish laws against texting and driving were enforced.

And yet, Montgomery county has done nothing so far. No arrests, not even a suspect yet. How about police do their jobs?

There is a basketball court only half a mile from where this occurred. It’s usually crowded with male teens and young men. Likewise there is a skatepark near Knowles and Summit in Kensington. It’s also a popular hang-out spot for shady looking characters. Police need to go to both these places (fora start) and start leaning on these boys until they come up with a suspect. The sicko that attacked this girl didn’t come from somewhere far-removed, he probably lives right there in the neighborhood. And he either frequents one of these two hang out spots, or one of his friends do. Police need to get out there and start rattling some cages until one of these little creeps on the ball court or skatepark gives up a name. That’s how you close cases. Good police work.

What do we get instead?

Press releases.

How is that even remotely racist? Do you even understand what the word “racist” even means? Or did you just hear it somewhere and repeat it like a parrot?

You watch a lot of 70's crime shows where cops shake down people to get info? Wacko ideas of cops just giving a bunch of people in a park the business to try and find a suspect who they have no idea has any relationship to them. Get with some degree of reality. Cops just can't go around "ratting some cages". If they did, you'd be in another post complaining about male cop aggressing.

DP

If I were a male teen and cops hassled me while looking for a suspect, I’d understand. I’d know they weren’t looking for me, so I wouldn’t take it personally.

The people who are talking about how RC Park is dangerous are making a point that is not applicable here. This is not like where Chaundra Levy was killed—deep in the park in an area not heavily trafficked. It was that thin stretch along. Beach Drive with the bike path that is extremely heavily travelled by the playground, and road. I believe she was not even in the park proper but was waking off that trail into the neighborhood, which is a family-filled neighborhood. The idea that a teen girl cannot be in such an area at dinner time at the end of a beautiful spring day is simply shocking.

DP here and I am about to say something racist. They’ll never catch that guy, and we all know why. Having lived a couple of miles from that spot a few years back, I used to walk (during the day, on sidewalks and generally on busy streets) —I used to get harassed constantly by Hispanic men driving by in cars. Treated like an absolute piece of meat. It was predictable and disgusting. Fact of the matter is most of these people are transient; no one is going to find that dude.

This.

He doesn’t live in the neighborhood. You have bus routes off major roads nearby.

Homeless transients camp in RCP. Deep, deep in the park.

So many day laborers do landscaping and construction/handyman work in the neighborhood. (FWIW, I can count nearly a dozen million dollar homes in 20895 that were burglarized within 6 months of their home renovation, and the police said it was likely by someone who did work at their house; one family had a car stolen when a worker swiped keys and came back for the car when they were away).

The criminal who assaulted the girl isn’t likely to be found.

Anonymous
You know I wouldn’t get so focused on the age of the girl - it could have been any woman

The alert should be that -once again - rapists are lurking on trails in RCP and demand more police patrols , especially at night

Predators of women attack in areas that they deem “ their territory “ , They are just like any other kind of predatory animal and what the Park Police should be investigating AGAIN as this happened several years ago around the time Chandra Levy was murdered is crack down on homeless living in the park , rooster fighting at night , Latin American gangs leaving tags on trees

Look for these signs and demand the police irradiate the problem

This would require additional funding, you know.
