Again, it is not woke to refuse to acknowledge that little girls should not be in Rock Creek Park after dark. This is not giving a pass to would be rapists. This is acknowledging the reality of the world we live in. It is possible to keep these two ideas in your head at the same time: 1) women and girls should not have to worry about their safety at all times and it is not their fault when men attack them, and 2) men often attack girls and women after dark, especially on trails, so it is not safe to be there. I wish it were safe and worry for my daughters as they become teens. I also am a feminist. But I don’t let them walk in parks after dark, nor do I encourage them to feel safe under those circumstances. I also will tell them not to get wasted around strange men, not to get into cars with men under many circumstances, etc. That is not victim blaming. It is living in reality. Until men provide otherwise, we have to assume they will take advantage. It’s not our fault, but we can’t make these situations safe, so we have to continue to avoid them. It’s infuriating.
Again, nobody is saying that we shouldn’t teach our kids about this stuff and I do talk about it. However, this is a 13 year old girl. Maybe she was heading home at the time, and ran a little late. It was barely past sunset, so it’s not like she was roaming around late at night. Not to mention that some 13 year olds make mistakes. Does she ‘deserve’ to be groped? No way.
Who said she deserved it? I said it’s part of the sad reality of this world. She certainly didn’t deserve it. Believing in reality is not the same thing as thinking things are as they SHOULD be.
Montgomery County needs to come down hard on this guy. And all the rest like him. That is the issue. We let men do this and get away with it, so they do it more. This is not an issue of a girl walking in a park by herself. Girls should be able to do that. This is an issue of men learning that they can grope women and face no consequences.
And yet, Montgomery county has done nothing so far. No arrests, not even a suspect yet. How about police do their jobs? There is a basketball court only half a mile from where this occurred. It’s usually crowded with male teens and young men. Likewise there is a skatepark near Knowles and Summit in Kensington. It’s also a popular hang-out spot for shady looking characters. Police need to go to both these places (fora start) and start leaning on these boys until they come up with a suspect. The sicko that attacked this girl didn’t come from somewhere far-removed, he probably lives right there in the neighborhood. And he either frequents one of these two hang out spots, or one of his friends do. Police need to get out there and start rattling some cages until one of these little creeps on the ball court or skatepark gives up a name. That’s how you close cases. Good police work. What do we get instead? Press releases. That’s what a culture of tolerance for misogyny gets you.
You are a POS racist.
