Apparently there have been other attacks against women in the area, but until a child was attacked, it didn't really make "news." I hadn't heard of the other attacks. It's not clear whether it's the same person, but the descriptions are apparently roughly consistent. I don't know what MCPD has been doing.

I had a conversation with my children, who are roughly the same age as the girl who was attacked, about street safety. Their father sat there pretty much silently. I told the kids that when they are out walking, they should be aware of where every other person is in proximity to you, whether they are men/women/children, whether they are getting closer to you or not; you should be aware of any "blind spots" coming up like bushes, trees, a wall that someone could jump out from behind; you should never be within 10 feet of a man you don't know or a blind spot unless there are lots of other people around who could help you. I make these calculations every single minute that I am out walking, as I think most women do if they spend any time at all as pedestrians. My husband, who is tall and athletic and grew up in urban areas, does not ever do this.

Very wise.

Did they actually do it?

Could you imagine it? Just take a moment to think about how your life would be different if you could feel safe. My entire life would change if men couldn't be outside after dark. Entirely. Men are the greatest thread to public health, peace, and prosperity. And even if it's "not all men", the others just sit back and let it happen, reaping the benefits.

I take different routes home from work in the winter. I spend a ton of money on cabs and still wonder if I'll end up with a rapist taxi driver. I constantly think about protecting my belongings and body when I'm walking after dark. And often in the daytime too, as lord knows men start folliwng you at all times of the day. React wrongly to "smile, baby" and you'll get a beating or cursing.

If men were locked down after dark, the world would be a much better place.

Which is also to say that this is in America. Just imagine being a woman in Pakistan or other muslim countries.

I’m truly saddened by your paranoia. No one should live with that much fear and anxiety. Please seek help.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you are probably a dude or a very naive and lucky (so far) female.

This reminds me of Chandra Levy. To this day I do not go to DCs beautiful park trails alone. If there are spots where women are routinely harrassed people should be demanding action. It should not be just "on" little girls to protect themselves.

If women just shot these guys when attacked it would probably have a deterrent effect on the other pervs who might be thinking about it.

Perpetrators of sexual attacks are not limited to immigrants from single-parent families. Ask Brock Turner.

A woman with a gun is no match for a would-be rapist. He would simply overpower her and take it, and either shoot her with it or use it to attack another woman after attacking her.

What do we know about him? Sorry, catching up here!

So an unarmed attacker is going to just disarm an armed woman? And she’s just going to stand there and let the guy attacking her take her gun?

Is this REALLY how you look at women?

Seriously????

Or better yet, we castrate them.

Better yet, capital punishment for sexual predators. Sexual predators have the highest rate of recidivism of any criminals. They stop when they are dead. Death penalty would be a strong deterrent.
