Fcps’s own data shows that most kids aren’t learning. |
Disagree with pp about high school math working well online. Maybe for the teachers but not for kids. The online formatting is frustrating, wastes tons of time, learning is extremely difficult, class time is much less than a normal year. we had to hire a math tutor for the first time ever because our bright kid was failing algebra 2-honors. |
That is not what it shows. What it shows is that more kids are getting Ds and Fs. And it’s not the kids who previously got A and B. It’s the kids who only barely ever got D’s because their teachers had way more ability to snag them and sit and make them do SOMETHING. *we* pull those kids over the line. But now they can turn off the meet, leave, ignore the breakout room invite, play video games. Our ability to MAKE them is gone. But grades don’t = learning and kids who normally would fail now failing because we basically can’t hold their hand the entire time doesn’t mean other kids aren’t learning. |

We won’t know how much learning loss there has been for elementary until school reopens.
The older kids are earning As and Bs just for showing up. |
There are a lot of ms and hs kids doing worse online then in a regular year—-anyone with kids in this age group knows that. Instructional time was cut way down this year so I’m not sure how anyone can argue they are all learning as much as they normally would. |
| I didn’t say they are learning as much as they normally would. That doesn’t mean they aren’t learning AT ALL. They are doing an admirable job. It’s insulting for parents to just blanket state they’re not learning or getting anything or progressing. They’re living through a worldwide crisis and personal disruption of normal. No they’re not achieving what they would in 2018, none of us are. But don’t take away what they have been able to do by claiming no progress or learning at all whatsoever is happening. |
Agree. And the teachers have clearly been instructed by admin to pass the high schoolers this year by hook or by crook even if the student has done no work and learned nothing. It’s going to be a mess next year when all those kids who were given Ds just to avoid having colossal failures try to do the next level of math, foreign language, etc without having learned this year’s material. |
The full curriculum isn’t being taught. And you’re right. Grades don’t equal learning. We all know that the non-failing grades have been inflated and cover less material. |
These kind of blanket statements are equally ridiculous. How could you possibly know what’s going on across the district learning wise? |
I can't speak to HS math. But my child's MS Honors Algebra 1 teacher is doing fabulous. My only gripe is that they've scaled back the curriculum and aren't going as depth into some of the topics. She said that is across FCPS. That's not her. That's the county, which is bullshit. |
Many of us are not doing this. I HATE giving a kid an F but I also go to the ends of the earth to help and support so if they can’t get to a D with all that, they need much more. I cannot help them access those supports and interventions and credit recovery if I lie and give them a D. It might make me temporarily feel better, oh, I didn’t fail a kid, but we know the counties will only be able to provide targeted support and remediation to the kids who failed multiple quarters. I cannot take away their chance to qualify for that help by assuaging my own conscience to give a D. |
It’s not bullshit. It takes forever to get through content online. It just does. We can’t hit it all so they’ve told us hit the MOST important standards. A lot of school is time filling tbh. We got rid of the “time filler” content. |
I as a teacher who works in this system have access to more information and data points than parents. You are mostly speaking about your own kids. I am not. |
You don’t have access to anything beyond your own students and as a teacher who wants to believe this entire year has not been in vain, you are seeing what you want to see. |
| I have a child who should have full time special ed support and he has done no work and who should be failing his classes. He has learned nothing all year. I want him to get Fs at this point because I don’t want him to be hopelessly lost next year. Somehow he has all Cs and Ds. I have told his teachers repeatedly to please give him the grade he deserves and they keep cutting out homework he never did, telling him he can skip quizzes, etc. It’s crazy, I don’t get it. They aren’t helping him by doing this. I can only assume they are under tremendous pressure to pass everyone. |
