Here’s the thing. Teachers associations are not labor unions not really. Even with collective bargaining you can’t strike. They don’t control or organize a pension and/or benefits for you. Most of us aren’t in the union because it’s expensive—I want to say $75 a month, and you are basically getting a lawyer if you need one—and not even a good one. FCPS knows teachers will return. We aren’t the hold up. My school has none of the technology ordered for concurrent. We were told we’d have masks. We are still waiting—apparently there’s a stockpile. There’s little support from central leadership. It’s a nice diversionary tactic for them to focus attention on FEA though. |
Okay, well bye! I don’t know why you are here if your kids don’t go to FCPS. Mine do and their teachers are incredible. Leadership....whew... |
My kid found out they are moving classes this week from their counselor. The teacher had no clue. If you’ve been at FCPS for a minute, you soon discover that the teachers usually find out after the fact. |
| Between FEA and OpenFCPS, both sides of the spectrum are covered. Maybe one day they'll be a meeting in the middle - which would probably represents 80% of the teachers and parents. |
Like I said, we want our kids to go to FCPS. We moved here for FCPS. Both my wife and I are FCPS K-12 grades. We didn't send our kids this year because why in gods name would we make a five year old go through virtual Kindergarten when there was another option available to us? We hope to go back to FCPS because we think when open FCPS provide a better education then private. We value diversity and community. But right now FCPS is providing nothing more then a portal for teachers to play youtube clips through. |
You said your kids don’t go to FCPS schools, so how do you know this. I have kids in two different schools and every single teacher has been incredible. My son got into an accident, and his teachers and counselors created a care package and dropped it off. They didn’t have to do that. You say you want your kids to go to FCPS, but I too don’t get why since you basically called it’s teachers lazy assholes? |
FWIW, the loud voices in America these days are extremes and the silent majority doesn’t tend to get heard, because they aren’t speaking up. Maybe the 80% should consider saying something. |
You say you think FCPS provides a better education, but you have 0 respect for the people who would be delivering that education. |
If you don't get involved then you don't get to push back when people blame teachers for the current situation. You don't want to pay? Ok, then when people blame teachers for the current situation you have to sit and take it. You are in a position to make a change and chose not to. You can make all the excuses you want, but that's just how it is. My dues are 2% of my salary, I make it work. |
It’s actually not. I’m not a teacher—I feel like I have to preface that. I don’t blame teachers. I don’t see them making decisions. FEA is out of touch, but they also seem to have little sway. As someone mentioned, Brabrand and the school board got caught with their pants down. I think they thought they’d be good to go in August and kicked the can down the road March-July. It’s the FCPS way. |
Where is the teacher lead effort to reopen schools? It's easy to come on here and say "FEA is dumb, I want to go back". Where is the organizing? Where is the messaging? Right now, like it or not the word from teachers is they do not want to go back until 2022 when children are vaccinated. And until we here from some sort of associations that represents the will of teachers then that will continue to be the position of the teachers. It's not on me to change that public opinion, its on the teachers. |
Or...here’s a wild idea. No. FEA has less than 3,000 members. They lack collective bargaining. They can SAY whatever they want. They have no actual power. Hell, I can say I’m a millionaire. It doesn’t mean I get a million dollars. Leadership also means you take a LOA from teaching, which effects retirement and healthcare. Most of us can’t afford to pay cobra prices, so parents can “stop blaming us.” So that’s a hard pass. Frankly, I don’t care who you all blame. When it comes time to go back, I’ll be there. |
Otherwise don't get mad when you get lumped into the other groups. |
I’d assume teachers are...working. I believe, and correct me teachers if I’m wrong, the message was made clear when there were few resignations and the FEA sick out went nowhere. If you are the PP, it sounds like your kids are in private. I’d like mine to actually have a teacher focused vs. organizing. |
Right now, no I do not. I have yet to see a single concerted effort lead by staff to reopen schools. Until I see otherwise that's not only my opinion but the opinion of quite a bit of the general public. |
