OP said the people were blocking the playground forcing everyone else to repeatedly come close to them.

Just venting. I wanted to say something to these adults but my husband insisted we just leave. We are in dc where it’s the law to wear masks. This was a small playground, the adults were talking animatedly and loudly, and the kids (masked, except for theirs) had to pass around their conversation to go from one part of the enclosed area to another. What would u have done?

Judging on the chronic level of hostility on this boards regarding this subject from both perspectives, I would just make the decision for my family's safety and simply leave. My conversation in opposition will yield no change in the questionable behavior, nor will it make me more comfortable having my children stay to play. Further, given the generally unhinged and volatile behaviors we have witnessed of late, I am not about to instigate any kind of antagonistic confrontation.

Oh my god. They’re outside. Who cares. Wear your mask and mind your own business.

Enough with the shaming, OP. These moms chose a relatively safe way to socialize. Stop judging others or “Stay the f*** home”.

Why not wear a mask, though? Why not to afford others a safe way to socialize?

Because socializing outdoors with a mask is low risk as is socializing outdoors without a mask. Maybe these moms needed to have real social interaction and see each others’ faces. Socializing outdoors is low risk in general and policing others with your superfluous mask rules isn’t helpful. Personally I am happy that people are finding less risky ways to get their social needs met. You have no idea what mental health challenges others are facing right now. I wish more people would look at the messaging that Julia Marcus has put out regarding risk reduction.

Well, why is your concern about the mental health is focused on those who don't wear masks? Do you know OP's mental state or physical health? You are fine with sacrificing her health and subjecting her to anxiety and isolation?

No one put a gun to OP’s head and made her stay near these women.

These women aren’t responsible for OP’s unfounded anxiety. OP isn’t responsible for mandating masks outdoors.

I was responding to PP's concerns about mental health challenges of some people but not the others. I agree that OP is not responsible for mandating the masks, yet wearing one is a right thing to do if you expect to see other people a close distance.

My family wears masks outdoors at places like playground because I don't want people mistakenly thinking we're assholes and I don't want to trigger anyone's anxiety. But I don't actually believe -- based on SCIENCE -- that it's necessary. For YOUR OWN mental health, try to pick you battles and don't worry about people who are unmasked outdoors, especially if your families' interaction with said people will be fleeting, such a walking by them in the course of playing on a playground. (Indoors is a whole different ballgame.) Don't let them derail your enjoyment of much needed fresh air and exercise in these crap times -- truly not worth it!

Right, she was forced to leave by their behavior. She could not use the area, though.

OP, do you believe that there is a significant difference in risk of transmission outdoors with masks vs outdoors without masks?

She could use the area. She wanted the group to follow her rules, rather than the existing Covid rules and chose to leave.

The existing “Covid rules” in DC require wearing a mask in public. She was forced to leave by people like you who’d rather be an asshole than follow the rules.

I think this is part of the problem. I'm in MD, so I don't know the details of the DC rules, but people are VERY confused about the MD rules.

When the local gov put out the mandate that masks must be worn outdoors, they had to issue a clarification because it made no sense. And now the rule is that you must wear a mask if you have a prolonged exposure of closer than 6 feet.

It's not clear if a playground would qualify as a prolonged exposure since they are not consistently within 6 feet.

The rules are not clear and that creates anxiety. I suspect that the unmasked moms were not violating the rules, but some people think the rules are more restrictive than they really are
