Enough with the shaming, OP. These moms chose a relatively safe way to socialize. Stop judging others or “Stay the f*** home”.

Why not wear a mask, though? Why not to afford others a safe way to socialize?

Because socializing outdoors with a mask is low risk as is socializing outdoors without a mask. Maybe these moms needed to have real social interaction and see each others’ faces. Socializing outdoors is low risk in general and policing others with your superfluous mask rules isn’t helpful. Personally I am happy that people are finding less risky ways to get their social needs met. You have no idea what mental health challenges others are facing right now. I wish more people would look at the messaging that Julia Marcus has put out regarding risk reduction.

Well, why is your concern about the mental health is focused on those who don't wear masks? Do you know OP's mental state or physical health? You are fine with sacrificing her health and subjecting her to anxiety and isolation?

No one put a gun to OP’s head and made her stay near these women.

They blocked the way, no gun was needed.

OP admits she left freely without issue.

Right, she was forced to leave by their behavior. She could not use the area, though.

She could use the area. She wanted the group to follow her rules, rather than the existing Covid rules and chose to leave.

The existing “Covid rules” in DC require wearing a mask in public. She was forced to leave by people like you who’d rather be an asshole than follow the rules.

I think this is part of the problem. I'm in MD, so I don't know the details of the DC rules, but people are VERY confused about the MD rules.

When the local gov put out the mandate that masks must be worn outdoors, they had to issue a clarification because it made no sense. And now the rule is that you must wear a mask if you have a prolonged exposure of closer than 6 feet.

It's not clear if a playground would qualify as a prolonged exposure since they are not consistently within 6 feet.

The rules are not clear and that creates anxiety. I suspect that the unmasked moms were not violating the rules, but some people think the rules are more restrictive than they really are

Exactly. And also explains why people yell obscenities at unmasked dog walkers from their cars.

While I agree with the first part of your post, I find it puzzling that you still decided to put the onus on those who DID follow the rules, however unclear the rules are, and err on the side of caution than those who choose to inconvenience others rather than themselves.

PP said that they don’t not know the rules but proceed to speculate nevertheless. What are you saying EXACTLY to? Learn the rules. If you can’t consistently maintain 6 feet distance, then mask up.

Yes, there are a lot of people here that don't understand the rules.

In both DC and MoCo, the rule is wear a mask if you'll be within 6 feet of others for more than a fleeting time. A lot of people don't seem to understand how far 6 feet is, and many others refuse to acknowledge the "fleeting moment" exception. If you're not willing to be 7 feet from maskless individuals at a park, with fleeting periods of closer encounters (e.g., kids running around), then that's your problem.

You can’t control other peoples actions, only your own. If I felt my or my kids health was at risk I would have removed us from the situation.

Because they were outdoors? Because you don't know if they are seeing each other for months and weeks? Bcs you can see them and not go into that area if you are a freak show that has to bump shoulders with people outdoors.

I can't see if I where a mask because my glasses fog up. It's particularly bad if it's cold outside. I will wear masks if I'm close to others, but I don't wear them if I don't have to.

I wear glasses too. Pull the mask up your nose, put the glasses on top of the mask. This usually works for me.

Have your been outside in cold weather? That doesn't work. Yes, it blocks the air from coming up by your nose, but not by your cheek bones. The colder weather is much less forgiving because the water vapor condenses so much more easily.

Mine fog up too. I deal with it. Adult.

If it's true you have glasses, then I doubt you spend much time outside. Particularly doing anything that gets your breathing rate up. Otherwise you quite literally won't be able to see in front of yourself.

I not only wear glasses, I wear progressives. giant ones. Believe me I understand. I still keep my mask on. Some of them I’ve sound wires into and some of them I just deal with fog until I’m alone and can adjust it. Some people I know use a little double stick tape. I prefer not to do that so I just tough it out when I don’t have the nose wires. It’s

Not fun coming in from outside or outside from in but once you transition to whatever the temperature is it’s fine. If you’re having this much of a problem you’re wearing the wrong kind of mask.

I've tried a ton of masks. Ones with and without eyes. Ones with foam gaskets above the nose and cheeks. One with 3 layers with a filter, and single layer. I've tried KN95s, surgical masks and cloth masks. They all fog up my glasses, particularly in cold weather.

I've tried anti-fogger on my glasses. That helps a bit, but not much.

I've even tried taping the bridge of my nose to the mask, which is incredibly annoying. That mostly worked in the summer, but in the winter the limited water vapor that makes it through and around the mask is enough to fog up glasses.

I don't believe either of you are doing extended activities in masks outside.

You’d be wrong. Sorry your face is weird!

What is the risk of asymptomatic transmission outdoors? Outdoors with masks? I guarantee it’s negligible. Virtue signaling.
Anonymous
OP you should really stay indoors and let the poors assume the risk like the rest of us decent people.

They were the freak show who situated themselves in the middle of the playground.

I like your speculations! Here’s my take. I think they see each other every weekend and came to the playground after eating indoors together. They don’t care.

Millions of people who wear glasses wear masks. You can too. Stop with the pathetic excuses.

It is much smaller than indoors but not null. Transmission depends on the proximity to others, exposure, and activity (speaking loudly and yelling increases transmission chances).

It’s not so black and white.
There is no risk of an indoor transmission when people are in separate indoor settings, but there is a risk of an outdoor transmission when people are yelling while standing close to each other.

I think you are being unfair to PP in glasses, and I am a huge mask proponent. They can safely stay 6 feel away from the others without a mask on.

Here you go. Now you can stop whining and making excuses and wear a mask just like millions of other Americans do who wear glasses. Except, of course, you won't, because its really just an excuse because "WAHHHHH I DON'T WANNA WEAR A MASK AND U CAN'T MAKE ME!" FOOT STOMP!
