My parents paid my expenses during college, but I tended to have part-time jobs to cover extras. I took loans for law school, but they helped with expenses including extra living expenses so that I could take an unpaid internship out of state, and study for the bar without needing to work. This helped me out a lot in terms of opportunities and kept my loan costs down. I do notice an appreciable difference between what it’s like starting out with student loan debt compared to people I’ve known whose parents paid for law schools, and who never had to take out loans.
I will pay for what I can with my kids. I do think paid part-time jobs in high school, college, or whenever are a good experience and help you keep perspective if you are aiming for an advanced degree and the type of career that might follow.
