Does it really matter though if they don't have insurance?

HUH???? Of course, it matters. Do you prefer to file an accident on your insurance even if they are at fault?

But many of them would have insurance if they could.

So glad I moved out of VA and to a state that doesn't do this nonsense.

How exactly are you screwed? You personally and this economy benefits from illegal immigrants FAR more than the illegal immigrants take from it. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

Nope. The insurance companies charge them more, so they just pass. Plus, there is no enforcement when it comes to undocumented immigrants, so word gets out that they don’t need to worry about paying for car insurance.

Lots on uninsured drivers (both legal citizens and undocumented immigrants) in MoCo.

Citizens get screwed in many ways.

Citizens are expected to follow the law (purchase auto insurance) whereas, undocumented immigrants get a pass. Not to mention the taxpayer funded services for undocumented immigrants.

Many citizens also ignore the law, are you kidding. And this law would *require* undocumented to get insurance, not give them a pass.

As for how much they put in vs how much they take, it's hard to say. When they get older, they will never take social security or disability if they get hurt, but they will continue to consume and pay rent to someone who in turns pays the property taxes. So, it's hard to say.

Of course citizens ignore the law. But it is harder to catch the undocumented immigrants who don’t follow the law. Good luck trying to find the driver of the car who hit and ran, when that driver is undocumented.

SMH... which is why this law is a good thing. If VA allows these folks to get a license and they have to show proof of insurance then you can track them down if they are involved in a hit and run. Good lord. I feel like we are arguing in circles.

Except that it does not play out that way. Come to MoCo and see how many hit and runs get tracked down.

SMH. Giving undocumented immigrants a drivers license just makes it easier for them. Nobody else.

Some don't get it. Some do get it. Just like some real Americans have insurance, and some don't, and if these folks hit your car, and run, you also have no way of tracking them down.

By allowing them to get licenses, it helps reduce the risks. SMH

Anonymous wrote:You can read more about it in the Washington Post. They just ran this article in the Virginia Politics section, “Virginia poised to aid undocumented immigrants with driver’s licenses, other measures”. They are also pushing to give undocumented/illegal immigrants in state tuition. Don’t really understand how the licenses can work while the state is expecting everyone to update their current driver’s license to Real ID. I guess the VA Senate will be voting on it tomorrow.

You can register to vote via on any DMV drivers license application. Just check the citizen box on the basic and you can vote? The real id compliance date is 10/1/2020. All real id should distinguish between citizen and non citizen. With real id or proof of citizenship for voting registration with reasonable exceptions. 40+ years ago it wasn't a huge problem . Look at PA- realid for legally present non citizen and any other license expires to match date legal presence expires.

DC 's also expire https://dmv.dc.gov/page/real-id-proof-lawful-presence
Wash Post also had the South Korean illegally present wanting a license and I guess that's a visa overstay. S/he has documents from South Korea but is illegally present in the USA. Overwhelming focus in VA is on illegal immigrants - wait. Last time I checked this state was cap of Confederacy- it's ike MD and illegal immigrants. More of a priority than AA and Baltimore. Twisted.

Last year when this didn't pass Dems were quoted as 25% of illegals were from Asia https://bluevirginia.us/2019/01/driving-privileges-for-undocumented-individuals-in-virginia-fails-despite-massive-turnout-from-community-members-and-advocates

You can own a vehicle but not have a drivers license and vice versa. If you register a car and don't have ins you're supposed to pay 500. Car registration renewals do not require policy numbers and proof of insurance.

My pp. If an illegally present person has a car title and /or registration for MD why would they change it to VA and pay car tax? If they live in VA and use a MD address for registration it's insurance fraud. See MD plates? You can report it and note if Arlington thinks it should get car tax instead of FFX they'll chase it.

If license and reg are now MD and the kids are in FCPS? Licenses are not insurance. What about commercial licenses? I assume e verify will never happen.

This is really just about registering illegal immigrants to vote via motor-voter laws.

Issuing a driver's license is a secondary factor. The real goal is getting them into polling places.

Absolutely! No doubt in my mind.

And come to MoCo, where you are explicitly forbidden to ask for ID.

? If you are forbidden to ask for ID how will letting them get a license enable them to vote? Wouldn't they be able to do it now, with no ID?
