I live in MD. In the past three years I’ve been hit by illegal immigrants at least twice who have licenses but expired insurance or no insurance at all. I was hit once in DC by a person of Hispanic descent and again they had no insurance.

My job required a lot of driving in the DMV area.

I don't know how other states do it, but I think in CA, illegal immigrants can get DL, but they look different than the normal ones for legal residents. That's who you can tell.

You don't seem to understand why they don't get them. It's not because they don't want to. It's because they can't. It's actually safer for them as well to have a valid DL because if they get pulled over while driving, and they can't produce a valid DL, they can get into more trouble.

Also, if they aren't going to get the DL as you seem to think, then what's the harm if they are allowed to get them? Do you think allowing them to get the license makes it easier for them to stay? Well, maybe.. but even if they don't get it, they don't seem to be going anywhere.

Also, it's a lot safer for the public.

I'm for it but not for any of the reasons above. This licensing will create an ersatz registry for illegal immigrants that will include a picture. So why wouldn't they want to get a license? Because they don't want to be on some list of "easy to report."

Which do you prefer, drivers who are licensed or drivers who are unlicensed? I prefer drivers who are licensed.

They prefer to live in Willy Wonka's CandyLand where they can pretend that the only undocumented immigrants are Oompa Loompas.

Meanwhile, the rest of us in reality-based world want undocumented immigrants to have a license, insurance, and registration so they can be found if they hit my car. And also so they pay their taxes.
