Democrats in Virginia’s legislature are “removing the citizenship and legal presence requirements for obtaining a driver’s license” in the Commonwealth.
The bills, known as HB 1211 in the House and SB 643 in the Senate, are sponsored by Kathy Tran and Jennifer Boysko respectively, both Northern Virginia Democrats. |
| Right now Virginia illegal immigrants have to get a DL in Maryland and then registering and insuring a car in VA is hinky. VA wants it's taxes on cars. |
| They drive anyway, at least now they would presumably need to pass a test and also be able to get car insurance for the cars that they have been operating as unlicensed and uninsured drivers. |
High time we started using drivers licenses and drivers licenses rather than as identification cards. |
| You want illegal immigrants to have a VA DL. If they get in an accident with you they can give a false name. You don't even know their real name. |
Which do you prefer, drivers who are licensed or drivers who are unlicensed? I prefer drivers who are licensed. |
They prefer to live in Willy Wonka's CandyLand where they can pretend that the only undocumented immigrants are Oompa Loompas. Meanwhile, the rest of us in reality-based world want undocumented immigrants to have a license, insurance, and registration so they can be found if they hit my car. And also so they pay their taxes. |
| Sounds like a good idea. |
Does it really matter though if they don't have insurance? |
| Right now a lot of them get DL in Maryland as PP said and then have MD plates/can’t or don’t register their cars in VA because that would require getting a VA DL. We had a huge fight about this in my condo association with some renters because our condo documents said that you have to have VA tags to get a parking permit. |
| Of course they do. Because all you have to do to vote is show a driver's license. |
You are assuming they will not immediately drop their insurance and will re-register. |
| They are driving anyway. Making it legal means there is more accountability involved. This is a good thing. |

The whole legal presence thing is in response to more than half the 911 hijackers having VA licenses.
I guess that's no longer a problem anymore. |
