Lacrosse is still important. But it isn't what it was just a few years ago. Thoughout its history, Prep has been a football school. It has been expelled from the IAC twice for dominating the conference. For a while Lacrosse was the dominant sport. Prep was nationally-ranked, a local powerhouse and it was drawing a large number of full-day applicants to the school. Crowds at games, especially vs. Landon, eclipsed even big football game crowds. This was in the realm of the controversial coach, Kevin Giblin, who built the program pretty much from scratch. Things have changed. Giblin is gone. The Lacrosse program doesn't have the sway it once had in Admissions. The IAC is no longer dominated by Landon and Prep. Games between the two bitter rivals that once drew huge crowds no longer do. Other IAC schools have caught up to the two powers. Gonzaga has greatly improved it's program to parity with Prep and Landon. Even St Johns has improved it's program. Football has regained it's former importance, in part due to the fact that the AD is also the football coach and that there are so many alums who played football and not Lacrosse. Things were fine when the Lacrosse players also played football. But when significant numbers decided to play Lacrosse only, that wasn't going to fly. |
No offense, but you can’t compare GPrep athletic program to that of SJC, Gonzaga, or DeMatha. Athletic powerhouse doesn’t exactly come to mind when thinking of Prep when you have these other schools in the DMV area. GPrep doesn’t even play IMG in any of the invitationals. |
Sorry, but your post is factually incorrect. Prep's Director of Admissions is not the football coach. Also, plenty of lacrosse players also play football. The freshman class (2023) has 45 boys playing freshman football and expects 40 about boys to play freshman lacrosse. This is out of 125 in the class. In regards to dominating the IAC, Prep has won the IAC Founders Cup (presented to the school with overall athletic excellence) 14 of the last 16 years. Prep dominates the IAC in multiple sports - they may not win every championship in every sport, but they win a lot more overall than any of the other IAC schools. Last year, for example, Prep won the IAC Championship in football, hockey, swim and dive, golf, baseball, and won the regular season (but not the tournament championship) in both lax and soccer. And more importantly, on top of being an athletic powerhouse Prep is also an academic powerhouse. The naysayers will roll their eyes, but Prep is academically very strong. Students have to work hard and graduates attend excellent colleges. |

The issue has never been around Prep not having strong academics but, I think some of you parents are overestimating the athletics. Ask yourself why Prep doesn’t play real powerhouses like SJC, DeMatha or GZ in their WCAC conference. Those schools produce the most D1 athletes and Prep doesn’t come near.
Prep is an excellent school but athletics do not register on the same scale as WCAC schools. |
There are 4 WCAC schools in football. CG, DM, GZ and SJC. The rest are garbage. MAC level. The big 4 have lower tuition allowing more financial aid to potential athletes and much larger enrollments. People always talk about GP and their 500 students but about 115 of those students are borders. Their non-border student body is much closer to the 390 or so. I can promise you GP's football, basketball and lacrosse teams aren't made up of kids from Singapore, the Philippines, Taiwan and South Korea paying $60K/year to go there. No way Prep can compete with the big 4 WCAC schools in football given it's much smaller student body and higher tuition. Especially now that the top of the WCAC's arms race has gone nuclear in football. |
Good point but, your argument does have a flaw. Sidwell Friends is cranking out D1 football and basketball players in the last 5 years. Demographics in terms of self pay and size of school (high school) are similar to GP. How come GP can’t pull the same caliber of D1 talent as Sidwell and soon to be others? |
You're seriously going to compare Sidwell's football to Prep's? Prep isn't on the level of the Big 4 WCAC's but they're definitely at that next level and probably #5 in the DC metro area the last couple years. Sidwell is the joke of a joke conference in football. 1 three star recruit to a mediocre (Stanford is #61 RPI) school in a decent conference doesn't make up for regular 40+ loses to average (being generous with that word) teams. Basketball's a different story. It just takes a couple kids to make a team seriously competitive. A small school can get a few good players and with a little luck have a couple good seasons. Long term schools schools like Flint Hill, SSSAS and Sidwell won't be able to compete with the top WCAC schools but they can have their up years. |
Literally any school can "crank out" a D1 player if a D1-caliber player chooses to go to the school for education. That has nothing to do with the quality of the school's "program," but they will probably do better than usual while that player attends. |
| Bottom line, if your child can’t make SJC, DeMatha, or GZ varsity team as a starter there is hope with GPrep. |
HA! OMG, I just chocked on my snack when reading this. Are you seriously trying to say Sidwell has more D1 recruits than Prep? What hole did you just crawl out of? Sidwell is one of the most unathletic schools in the DMV. Maybe they have had a small handful of decent players through the years (and I do mean years....and years), but nothing compared to the consistent recruits that come out of an athletic (and academic) powerhouse like Prep. Prep has numerous D1 (and others) recruits in every single graduating class. College coaches know that Prep students play at an elite level in the IAC conference, tournaments, etc and that they can handle themselves academically. All this and their long history and strong academics makes them highly desirable to college coaches. |
IAC is not elite level. No comparison between IAC vs WCAC. As someone mentioned earlier GPrep has never even played IMG or been invited to the MD invitational. |
| IAC lacrosse is better than WCAC lacrosse. |
I don’t doubt that. GPrep is an excellent school, strong academics, and phenomenal facilities. As pp pointed out, GPrep has a higher tuition and they do not have the ability to give large grants which eliminates a large portion of applicants with D1 abilities. Not to say D1 athletes are only lower to middle class. |
| Stick to WCAC |
...if you think you're good enough to play football or basketball at the next level. Or you can't afford the cost of an IAC education, which, let's face it, is what those schools are there for. Nobody that has the option picks St. John's, GC or DM over Prep unless you're an elite athlete. GZ is a different story and actually has an identity of it's own. |
