It would be interesting to see what percentage of admitted students are immigrants, born to immigrants, or second generation American. Many immigrants have strong work ethics, especially compared to second and third generation Americans. |
How about we celebrate their achievements and also recognize that the education system is failing its students? |
Interesting that NYC is keeping it a meritocracy. |
Yep. The fact that 1st Gen immigrants can outperform those whose first language is English, and whose cultural norms are not US based indicates that bias is probably not what accounts for their success. |
You don’t think there is an issue at all? |
Translation They work nights and cook cheap meals to pay for tutoring and test prep. White students know it is a race to no where, that is why asians outperform on tests but then not at work. |
Asians have the highest poverty rate in NYC. This article discusses this issue. https://www.google.com/amp/s/nypost.com/2014/07/19/why-nycs-push-to-change-school-admissions-will-punish-poor-asians/amp/ |
| What can be done? How can the Black parents step up for their kids? |
And how can we support them? And anyone else who needs support. |
Stress academics as much as AAU, gym work and soundcloud. Black kids def work hard - you can’t be amazing at b-ball or football without putting in work. It’s about bandwidth and where you choose to spend your time |
Sure, it has nothing to do with intellect, work ethic and a cultural value placed on education. Keep your unintelligent head in the sand and things will never change. |
I think there is obviously a very significant set of issues but solving them starts in the homes of black families.....that’s where every child’s values and behavioral patterns are formed. |
It's not a race to nowhere because Asian Americans need higher academic credentials to get a foot in the door and advance relative to their white counterparts. Discrimination and prejudice are entrenched in the American workplace and that's why Asian Americans, Blacks, Hispanics, and all minorities tend to not "outperform" at work. So you are actually pretty accurate - white's don't study as hard because they don't need to. |
I don't think going to a tutor starting at 5 and not having a childhood is something to honor or imitate. |
No google did a study and found engineers with lower grades did just well as those with high test scores. |
