But let’s not lower the bar and extend affirmative action with an easier admission standard just for for the sake of having students of color. There are lots of minority students admitted in any case. Asians are a minority, you know.

They do.

The fewer in universities and positions of influence, the better.

oh, please.. it's not like conservatives care about Asians either. They only really care about rich people and lowering taxes.

Liberals care about poor people and minorities, hence affirmative action and desire for living wages. Conservatives, not so much. Remember Romney's infamous 47% gaffe.

??? It wasn't a gaffe. (Unless you mean saying it out loud was a gaffe for a politician).

He was right, and if Hillary said it she would have been right too. Where's the "gaffe?"

They need to put $$$$ into the low income elementary schools. By the time you get to the high school exam, it’s too late. These asian kids get in because of what they are learning outside of school. Other lower incone Kids need that kind of support. You can rig admissions in high school, but that’s not where it will help. It has to happen in Kinder and first and second etc.

Lowering standards in order to exclude better qualified Asian Americans and whites is manifestly racist.

Too many Asian Americans have been brainwashed to operate against their interests. Their hard-working ancestors, who faced much discrimination, would be ashamed.

How very typical of white conservatives—telling the Asian PP how to think about issues around race.

+1 It's funny how people want to place the blame on the schools or even other students (which is pathetic, even by their standards) instead of looking hard at the endemic cultural issues in their own community that consistently drive sub-par outcomes.

NYCPS district overall is 67% black/Latino, 15% white, 15% Asian. Stuyvesant High School is comparable in selectivity to TJ, but I suppose a bit more prestigious, with more national prominence. This is a huge story.

What is going on here? How are Asians so wildly overrepresented and black and Latin kids so underprepared in a $24 billion annually system?

Only two possibilities really: black children don't want to go so they don't apply or black children don't get in because can't meet the admissions standards....probably a combination of the two.

it's mainly #2 stats bear it out can we get to 17 pages again lol probably time to lock the thread

I think it's mainly that top African American and Latinx students are getting scooped up by private schools to help their diversity. This is how privates have @ 10-15% URM.

I hate this test prep culture but if someone wants their kid to study for one test every evening and weekend from the age of 10 on, so be it. There are lots of other good HSs in NYC. This is not some.zero sum game.

I'm mixed race and have mixed race kids in NYC. I suspect that with a little test prep they could get into a SHS (e.g., my DC1 just took the SCAT and qualified for CTY with zero test prep -- I myself didn't even know the test format until we got his score). But I'm not sure I would want him to go to Stuy. I don't want him to be the token anything or a victim of racist bullying (e.g., what just happened at ElRo HS in Manhattan). Brooklyn Tech (which requires the same test) is much more diverse and therefore more appealing to us. Which also explains why privates are so successful in getting AA and Latinix students from publics.

This. These students all go to the same NYC public schools so what is the difference? Parents who value education and make sure their kids do what they need to do to be prepared for the test. Children are not being raised by the schools. They have parents to raise them. Clearly, some parents understand that their child's education doesn't being and end at the school doors.

you mean the other kids need an active Mom and Dad vehemently instilling the value of hard work and education? Public school with even more money is not going to do that?
Yes, Asians and Jews do it that best. Plus it's in the Torah.
