$24 billion NYC public schools only accepted 7 black students (of 895) to top magnet high schoool

Anonymous
Freshman acceptance:
7 black
33 Latino
587 Asian
194 white

NYCPS district overall is 67% black/Latino, 15% white, 15% Asian. Stuyvesant High School is comparable in selectivity to TJ, but I suppose a bit more prestigious, with more national prominence. This is a huge story.

What is going on here? How are Asians so wildly overrepresented and black and Latin kids so underprepared in a $24 billion annually system?

I would be curious to see the number of each racial group that applied... or are students selected from the entire NYC public school pool without needing to opt in?

Couldn't find this year's info, but the data from last year is here, and I'm sure it's quite similar:
https://www.chalkbeat.org/posts/ny/2018/03/07/few-black-and-hispanic-students-receive-admissions-offers-to-new-york-citys-top-high-schools-again/

Here are the percentage of test-takers who were admitted to Stuyvesant:

Native American 2.69%
Asian 6.96%
Black 0.17%
Latino 0.42%
White 2.94%
Multiracial 8.58%
Unknown 4.29%

Is that the one and only barrier? Cost of test prep?

NY Times coverage of this has been tops:

I can’t recall where I read it (maybe NYT comment section on Facebook) but someone said the upcoming classes will be even worse! Something about the most recent 7th grade test that puts you in contention to apply to Stuy? They said and cited a source that “less than a handful” of black kids city-wide have qualifying scores.

It has a pretty high FARMS rate... a rate that most people on this forum would consider too high to be a "good" school. 45%.

Somehow, these low income families seem to figure out how to pay for the test prep.

So it's just the cost of test prep that's the barrier? No other barriers?

New school..same story. Blacks and latinos overall perform worse and Asians tend to perform the best. It is not strictly test prep but rather a million little factors that are holding back certain groups. Have you listened to the podcast on Success Academy and Eva Moskowitz? If you do not have support at home and are stuck in a bad school or with 25 other kids who don’t have support at home, it is difficult to learn the basics. It is very sad.

Many of them are from immigrant families that prioritize their kids education. They're not necessarily getting prepped, but they are very focused on school and succeeding there.

And offered during the school day I think it said — suggesting some kids couldn’t get there after school or weekends for various reasons.

“This is actually tricky -
Admission to Stuyvesant is determined by a single test avail to all middle school students in NYC.There are no soft criteria-no interviews,no legacy favoritism, no strings to be pulled. It’s all abt test score which determines if you can handle academics.”
